The Quests was the important thing. That was because the physical object may have never existed but it represented the purification of self that was trying to pull Europe (England) out of the Dark Ages.

England was a big mess of petty kings fighting and killing each other. No one really one, but the peasant definitely lost. Then this noble chivalry idea sprang up, codifying the rich and powerful with a moral dignity that had been lacking for hundreds of years. But they needed something to do...

The idea of the Holy Grail came from France. The knights searched all over England looking for it. Where did they find it? France.

The other possibility is that it really was just a big prank pulled on the English by the French.
