it packs the tobacco in the cig more tightly, supposedly enhancing its taste, but also made the cig last longer.

the trick is to pack the tobacco towards the filter. when I did try smoking in college, I managed to pack it in the wrong direction, resulting in lots of loose tobacco when I opened it.

Also people tap the cigarettes to pack the tobacco closer together. This allows the cigarette to burn more evenly.

Actually, they don't. As a smoker myself, I find people who make a big production out of "packing" their cigarettes to be really annoying. At most, one swift tap will suffice. Beating the crap out of a package for ten minutes is ridiculous. "You gonna smoke 'em or are you gonna beat 'em to death?"

It packs the tobacco. An insufficiently packed cigarette tends to "lose its cherry", i.e., the burning part falls off.
