Is it possible to serve in the Army or Navy for two years and then transfer into the Air Force?

If I were to enlist in the Army/Navy for the shortest term and then decide to enter the Air Force, would it be possible?

the Air Force is not currently accepting ANY prior service personnel unless their previous jobs translate directly to a severely undermanned AF position WITHOUT retraining.

Not sure what the shortest enlistment is for the Army or Navy but you'll have to serve it before you can join the AF. You can't transfer the remainder of your enlistment to any other branch but you could check into a transfer out of the active duty Army and go into the Army Reserves or National Guard. I know of several people who've done that in the AF, you may want and talk to a Reserve or Guard recruiter.
Now you can serve your time and then enlist in the AF. When I cross trained into flight engineer there were a dozen former soldiers & marines going through Aircrew training. They went onto be boomers, loadmasters, gunners & FE's. Again talk to an AF recruiter for more details...enlisted aviators are always in demand.

Yes and no.

There are no two year enlistments other than the National Call to Service program. Which is next to impossible to enlist under.

No you cannot transfer from active duty in one service to another service.

You have to wait untill your enlistment contract is finished, then go enlist in another service.

So you could enlist in the Navy for 4 years, serve that 4 years and then go enlist in the Army.

Right now, because the Navy and Air Force are getting smaller, they do have a program to transfer active duty members who volunteer, into the Army.

But that program will probally be over with in 2008.

Right now, only the Army, Navy and Marines are taking prior service enlistee's.

The Air Force only took 40 in 2007 and they had to be in specific jobs.

What most people don't realise, is that Air Force National Guard and Reserves, are considered prior service to the Air Force, so even they aren't allowed to enlist or transfer to the active duty Air Force.

Normally yes, but the Navy and Air Force are downsizing, while the Army and Marines are growing, so it's next to impossible to do presently.

There is, however,a program called Blue to Green to bring Prior Service AF and USN personnel into the Army.

Nope you will be required to fulfill your entire enlistment contract with whatever branch of service you choose. Four years minimum.

After that you can get out and SEE if another branch MAY allow you to enlist in their branch of service.

Just a word of experience, most branches don't really want other branch service people in their branch and they require a waiver for you to enlist at all.

Best bet is to do your research before hand and ONLY enlist when you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. This isn't like college where you can just drop out if you don't like something and just go to another school.

Nothing says you can't go talk to a recruiter from every branch and play 20 questions about what their particular branch is all about. You can talk to as many recruiters as you want as often as you want. But don't enlist and then whimp out and decide you are going to be a cry baby and get out because it isn't what you thought is was going to be because you didn't educate yourself on the pro's and con's of each service.

I have seen people do just that. I've served in the Navy and I knew one guy who had been in the marines and one guy who had been in the Air Force,

but you need to finish out your term before you transfer.

I think it depends on your MOS. Many fields are in high demand, and if you finish one branch, you can always enlist in another. The worst that could happen is that you would be rejected. But, today, I believe the services are in need of personnel.

At the end of your enlistment, you could apply to join another service. You cannot transfer from one to another prior to your being discharged.

yes! My sister's ex father-in-law was retired Capt. with Air Force and retired from the ARMY. (Not sure what rank he was in army...I think army was first)

First, you have to finish your commitment to that respective branch. We have one guy in our shop who was prior Army.
