An alcohol made from some kind of sugar

Like Rum (made from Sugar Cane). The reality is however that all alcohol is made from converting sugar to alcohol. Even if it comes from grains, or fruits. So, it could be from anything.

The company is probably being generic about the ingredient so that they can use a diverse supply for the product. Sometimes they use alcohol made from beets, sometimes from wheat, sometimes made from corn (whatever is available and the right price).

"Sugar alcohols" are those additives ending in -ol. They are sweeteners and they do contain some calories, but usually much less than sugar does.

Wikipedia defines them as "A sugar alcohol (also known as a polyol, polyhydric alcohol, or polyalcohol) is a hydrogenated form of carbohydrate. They are commonly used for replacing common sugar in foodstuffs, often in combination with high intensity artificial sweeteners to counter the low sweetness. Furthermore, they do not contribute to tooth decay."
