It's called a prior service enlistment. Typically, you get 1 year addition to the maximum enlistment age for each year of active duty that you served. So, for example, if the maximum enlistment age for the AF was 30 and you served 4 years active, you could enlist again up to age 34.

The Air force has a maximum enlistment age of 28,
You are allowed a credit up to four years prior service to the age limit, based on prior military service.
So they would waive the age limit up to 32 years old.
Now the bad news, the Air Force doesn't take prior service.
In 2007 the AF only allowed 40 prior service members to enlist, and they had to be in very specific jobs.
Linguistics, combat controller, para rescue, sere.
Or prior service Army Rangers or special forces.
Navy seals
Marine Force recon.
The last 3 only for those who wanted to be AF combat controllers or para rescue.

In the Army the manadtory retirement age is 62--you can serve up to your 63rd birthday.
At the end of a term of enlistment, unless flagged for personnel or disciplnary actions, you may extend your current enlistment for 1 to 23 months or re-enlsit for between 2 and 6 years.
You can have a break in service. If the break is too long, you will have to attend some form of training, even including repeating the full Basic Training course. Also the reason for separation and type of discharge factor in.

The Air Force doesn't take prior service too often, but you can theoretically go back in. You adjusted age has to be below the maximum allowable age for enlistment.

Yes. We have had friends who have had breaks in service. Sometimes the downside is coming back in at a lower rank then when you got out.
