I have shot many .22's and .17's but i am ready to step it up, I like the looks of a Mini 14 or an AR 15 but some people reccomend blot action .243's. thank you.

My favorite centerfire cartridges are 30-06, .308, and the , .223. It all depends on what you want to do with your firearm. if big game is your thing than the 30-06 and the .308 will do well. If your looking to shoot comp. than the .223 will serve you well out to 600 yards, if your a good shot. the .308 is an excellent round for competition also and will go even farther than the .223.
if we had more details we could help you better tho

If you intend to hunt deer you might as well start with at least a .243 Winchester. The .25-06 is even better.
Best.

If you are goimg to hunt, a .308 or 7x57 are great calibers for hunting anything in North America except Grizzlys. Both are accurate, are good for reasonable distances and relatively low recoil. The .308 is available in a huge number of rifles including AR types, bolt action, semi auto and single shot from inexpensive to custom guns. The 7x57 is consider a little old fashioned but is still one of the all time greats.

If you're looking for something to just target shoot, get a bolt action, if you want a plinker, look into a mini 14 or a AR15, you'll burn up more ammo, but it's what ya buy a rifle like that for. If you do want to start shooting for accuracy, you can always buy target barrels and other accessories for either rifle later.

I'd recommend a .243 rifle. They are very accurate, easy to shoot, and have little recoil. They are an excellent place to start when you are ready to move up to centerfire rifles. Best of luck.

I'm gonna step off here.... 30-06.
Its able to take any game on the N. American continent. Its accurate enough to compete with. Its able to be "down loaded" to take small game and varmints. It can be loaded for plinking, target shooting and hunting.... Heck, I cant think of much that round can't do.
