Tomorrow, during the Seahawks (seattle football team) im gonna be walking out on QWEST field to regive my oath of enlistment for the Army. Just 24 of us, all apart of the future soldiers program, are gonna walk on the field, before the game, JUST US, on NATIONAL television, monday night football! Really NERVOUS!!! Should i take a few "Calms Forte" to counter act this in a sense? I HATE getting in front of a class room to give a presentation LET ALONE something thats gonna be broadcasted worldwide, i am trying to demonstrate one of the Army values, which is "personal courage" i know ill be fine, my family will be watching, jesus christ. LOL. Anyways, any tips? other than to just do it? i am GOING to do it, this is a really good opportunity im sure i will remember the rest of my life, should it ever end in Iraq, (god forbid, i am going Infantrymen, so you never know).

Get really drunk the night before so your head hurts too much to worry about being nervous.

Public speaking is actually easier then a conversation, if you think about it. When you are presenting, wether its a classroom or a stadium, you control 100% of the conversation. All the people are just going to stare at you as you speak, the same way a herd of cows would if you started speaking to them. In a conversation, you only control 50% of the speech. An audience doesnt answer back, thet only listen. Just recite what you have to. Let the crowd just watch, because that is all they are going to do.

I think that's exciting. The good news is you're not alone. The other 23 swearing in will probably feel the same way. You'll do fine and afterwards you'll be proud of yourself forever.

But to add some humor -

I like the answers here. Maybe combine some of their suggestions. Get shitfaced the night before and eat five cans of baked beans. That way, you'll be totally hungover and not care plus you'll be ripping anus burning farts.

Whenever I ever have to say a speech for anything, a tactic that I like to use is instead of thinking about all the people looking at me, or about where I am , I just imagine the words in my head and focus on them instead.
So if I had to say ... "I pledge allegiance..." or something, I would see in big bold letters "I" and "PLEDGE" and "ALLEGIANCE..." scrolling by in my head.
I find it to be an extremely useful in calming my nerves simply because it allows me to think about what I'm saying, and still not focus on what the crowd is thinking.

FIRST....Take a deep breath. There will be a rehearsal. You will not be alone. Just try to relax.
SECOND I doubt you will serve in Iraq. If you do serve your chances of being killed or hurt are less than you risk driving on American highways...... During the last five years just under 4,000 servicemen have died in Iraq.....during that same period over 210, 000 Americans died on American highways....
