My Yorkie is on her 60th day. We are all ready to go, I have all my supplies, her whelping box is all ready, I have done all my homework and now were just waiting on her labor.
My question is, Do you let your bitch cut the cord or do you cut it? A lot of books I have read says the bitch will cut it but I'm so afraid if she cuts it to close.

Ask your breed mentor. You know the person who you met through your Yorkshire Terrier breed club after you purchased your AKC registered show quality dog from a breeder. This is the same dog you are currently showing and working on her points, titles and wins and are already in talks with several proven stud owners. You also know just what to look for in a Yorkie, you know the is and outs of the breed as far as background, standard ad genetic health screenings. You have been studying for years and have just had a blond moment and your breed mentor is unavailable to be reached at the moment. Oh none of this is true? THEN YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BREEDING. GET YOUR DOG FIXED ADD: 1) Vet is a dumbass and needs to go back to school 2) By age two your dog will be done GROWING and maturing. 3) again obvious you know jack about breeding 4) Don't come crying to us when your dog is in labor AND having complications and you don't know what to do

If you and your bitch are close, there is no reason why you can't cut it yourself. So if you are worried, do it yourself because your female will sense you are nervous, which won't help her. We had a problem with one of our Chihuahuas when I was growing up who was a great mother, but you had to make sure you cut the cords, and did not allow her to. She did bite them too close and we even had to bring a pup to an ER vet to save it.

I really hate this waiting game. I'm in your boat and waiting for my girl to have her puppies too. She is showing all the signs of first stage labor!

The cord will often tear by itself, so you may not have to do anything. It can be helpful if the palcenta remains attached for a few minutes, as it contains blood and contracts to increase the pups blood volume.
If the cord is pulling hard on the pups navel and the mother has not dealt with it herself you can cut it leaving approximately one inch of cord attached to the pup. If it bleeds a lot you can tie it off with some clean pre boiled thread

I cut the cord everytime. I clamp the cord with dull scissors & cut below that with sharp scissors . Then tie off with dental floss, I also use rubbing alcohol on the cords. I've never had any infections or hernias on my puppies. Good luck !

You should cut it AND take away the sack .Only let mom eat one we always do the first after that she is so busy with puppies she don't even care we took the rest away.If you let her eat all of them she will get really bad BLACK poop and some puke it up latter. My vet told me one is all she needs .Have white thread ready too .If it don't stop bleeding pinch it off tight and then tie it .Good luck!!!!

I cut it myself on my dachshunds. That way I can leave it longer....problem is the mother wants it off completely and can in the very least give it a hernia. Sterile scissors, as much length as you can, dab of betodine. Let mother lick it, but until she has another pup that will be her focus, so watch her like a hawk..new moms are very nervous

Ahhh, and that is the question! I'd let her cut them, until she proves unable to do a good job. Back when I enjoyed this facinating hobby, I let a couple of my girls do their own cords, they were good at it, another girl would pull hernias if left alone, so I cut hers.

If you do cut them yourself, be sure to watch her, so as not to let her undo you handiwork!

Very, very often the mother's bite is just fine. It is quite rare for her to bite too close. If very nervous, cutting it yourself won't hurt the pup either; just be sure to apply a special ointment to it to insure the pup won't get infected through the open stump.
