It is part of the common vernacular in Western Society. It is just like saying oh F$@@ or for Christs sake. It does not mean that someone believes in your God. It simply means that they grew up using the same language as everyone around them. It is such a common expression that it is ingrained in our terminology.

Why not? It's no longer considered religious, it's modern dialect. Besides, loads of people say "oh my..." instead.

As for people with other beliefs; here's the cutest one I've heard so far; a woman (both her parents devout Catholics, she herself very open to alternative religions) "Oh my goddess".

In my case, I can even pick between which "god" would be "my god" - so I suppose it's okay for me to say "oh my god"... so long as I specify which one it is. But I usually resort to just saying "oh my". Or "what the feck".

*grin*

Im an atheist and Ive said it several times...it just has no meaning for me...its just as another word that has been tied to a certain form of expression. If you say the f word you arent doing intercourse, if you say sh*t you arent doing #2 etc. Its a form of expression not religiosity.

well...an atheist unfortunately doesn't care that using the Lord's name in vain is wrong to begin with....so there is nothing hindering them from saying that!! They really don't care about anything that has to do with God, or religion! ) :

An Atheist can say "Oh my God" just as easy as a Christian can say "Hail Zeus"

It just shows you that your friend really knows that there is a God, its our instinct in us to know that there is a God, it will even come out when you don't want it to.

Many do because they do not put the same meaning to the word as a theist does. For many it is just merely an expression.

Yeah. Well most of the time when people say it, they're not really talking to God. They just mean "Wow, I can't believe that happened."

Cultural expression. Long ingrained. It's part of the lexicon.

Yup. Can Christians say it? Isn't it taking the Lord's name in vain?
