Find out from others who they hired, and how they like them. Also ask those who attended weddings whose djs were great, and whose were mediocre. Then ask the wedding party where they got the dj.

Word of mouth is the best way.

I looked at reviews from websites, but ultimately it was meeting them at a Bridal show that did it for me. Other DJ's were seeing more business, but my guys convinced me they would work their butts of for me. They had cheaper prices, which is nice because reception entertainment isn't my top priority (I was going to iPod it, but saw their price and decided against it). They do have the latest equipment, and the price includes unlimited time, which is great. I also experienced good interaction with them, which is important. If I don't like someone, I'm not going to use them, no matter if everyone else swears by them.

find a few DJ's and ask them if you could see him perform. be respectfull to the wedding party and do not crash it but show up and look in on how he performs. If anyone asks let them know you are here to see the DJ because you are wanting to hire him. then ask them what they think about him.

nothing like first hand from the customer.

you will have to make appointments with a couple and talk to them and see how you feel. they might also have pictures and things like that and tell you about prices. some also have video where you can see how they do.
