Here is what I typically tell owner's taking a pet home that had surgery that day....
-It's ok to offer small amounts of food and water, if they keep it down you can offer a little more 30 minutes later.
-Keep them away from steps or anything they can fall off of/down since they may still be a little groggy.
-Restrict activity for 7-10 days (no running, jumping or rough play) leash walk if possible.
-Watch the incision for any redness, swelling or discharge.
I'm sure he is fine. If he drank too much water @ once, that could be why he is vomiting. Anesthesia can cause them to vomit, that is why dogs and cats need to fast before surgery. Just keep him warm tonight, try offering a little food and more water later (very small amounts) and see if he keeps it down. Just keep an eye on him tonight, he should be feeling a little better tomorrow. If he continues to vomit tomorrow or you notice anything unusual, take him to a Vet.

did they fast the dog before they did the surgery? a fast of 12 hours is recommended before surgery...if that didnt happen, it could be causing your dog to be a bit pukey. if he was fasted (and if he wasnt) any food or water given too soon after surgery can cause tummy upset as well. i feel that you should give water only in small amounts at first, and increase it gradually. if he keeps water down, offer a little food. also, your dog will need to get some rest. he may be "not himself" at first, but that should improve soon. i would bet too that he is at least a little stressed...shelters are stressful places sometimes for animals. then he had surgery AND went to a new home with new smells and new people all in the same day? thats tough!
go with your gut...if you feel that there is reason to be concerned, ALWAYS call a vet. it things get worse, you really really need to call a vet. also, didnt they give you any discharge instructions? refer back to those if they did...maybe there will be something helpful there.
I AM NOT A VET AND I AM NOT GIVING ANY MEDICAL ADVICE...im just stating an opinion based on my own knowledge and experiences. and like i said, if there is a strong concern in you, call your shelter or vet! good luck!

Vomiting is a side-effect of anaesthetic. Also not wanting to eat and drink afterwards. he may not want to eat until tomorrow. Don'ty let im drink too much at a time.
I just had my dog spayed and she didn't eat or drink until the day after.
I think it very irresponsible for the shelter to give you the dog straight after the operation. Were you given a care/advice sheet from the vet to tell you what symptoms to look out for and the care of the dog? Phone vet in the morning to get advice.
Good luck with the new edition.

Call the shelter and ask for the phone number of the vet who did the neutering. If they aren't open call an emergency clinic and ask for advice, some are good and will tell you if they think it's an emergency. My pups are always sent home the day of spaying/neutering and I've never had one vomit. Your dog probably still has an upset stomach from the procedure. It's normal for them to be off their food for a couple of days and lethargic. Good luck.

I often only give a very few pieces every 1/2 hour for the first day. If he's drinking that much try lettign him lick ice today and that should help if itcontinues callthe shelter or take the dog to your vet.

"First of all call the shelter or a vet". Don't let him have free choice to the water bowl, the more he drinks the more he is going to vomit. They should have given you a detail sheet on what to do and watch for. Letting him eat or drink to much will make him vomit after surgery.

Usually dogs wont eat or drink at all after the surgery. It's great that your dog is actually eating! I would wait a day, and if he continues vomiting go to the vet and see what they have to say. It might be the anesthesia making him vomit, or he might just be feeling a bit...awkward.

TO THE VET! And you also need to call the animal shelter and tell their vet. They may have messed up by releasing him too soon and the doctor wasn't informed.

I used to work at a vet clinic, and when we sent owners home with newly neutered animals, one of the warning signs for owners to watch for was vomiting.
This could be a reaction to the drugs they used, it could be a VERY DANGEROUS complication.
RUN TO A VET!!!
They're the only ones who can tell the difference.
