I'm having a baby in a few weeks and my husband heard of something called paid paternity leave for the father. Is it a state required thing, or is it something that only a few employers offer?

Some agencies of the Federal Govt offer it and it's called "Family Leave Policy" the Fathers are allowed to take up to 6 wks off with the newborn baby or for any other reason to care for a child. I'm in the Washington DC area and we have friends who have used this many times.

In Canada they have "Parental Leave" that is up to six months in length and can apply to either the mother or the father. This is also used for adoptive parents who are wanting and needing time at home to adjust to becoming a new family.

Very few states (Washington state is playing around with the idea of paid maternity leave for moms) pay for maternity leave. You can use vacation and sick leave (I used all mine up because my son was born 11 weeks early and they let me cash it in all at once). If he works for a company with 25 employees and has been working for that company for 12 months or longer he can use FMLA for up to 12 weeks of UNPAID leave.

It's common in Canada, and the Northeast. Depends on where you live and your employer. It is not federally mandated.
