I assume that only atheists are answering my question... hello. what i was wondering was, is there any atheists out there who believe that religion is good for the structure of society? i obviously am an atheist, but i have always thought that religion has kept society under control, it gives fear to people and so those in charge have power and control, but it does have its positives on society, i have to say. I just want to hear what other atheists have to say... even if u don't agree... make ur reply humorous.. (i think thatz how itz spelt.. lol) well, kk thnx ppls

I'm a Christian and no I do not believe that religion has always been good for the structure of society. Like you said, it becomes a control, even an opiate of the masses - which in itself is not good. I frankly believe that many in the world, even today, suffer from the unconscious following of religious leaders and doctrines questionable as being logical and God-ly even with philosophy.

Religion can also give people a false sense of being spiritual, without even knowing God. How come the majority of the world does not describe Christians as being like Jesus?

No, religion is not the only control.

Too sleepy to go into detail but it just one of many ways to control the masses.

In the USA, the mass media has taken over from religion to produce a nation worshipping the god called Nationalism.

At one time it was, but in the modern age it is clearly not needed. Think about it, religions have been slowly dropping away their more questionable practices. Society does not need religion to be kept moral; rather, it is the other way about.

Religions does control people, it makes them lemmings. That is not a positive.
Read some dystopian fiction some time. Try George Orwell's 1984

If the law isn't scary enough, I don't know what is.
Religious ppl aren't anymore moral than anyone else.

What makes them possibly worse is that they can get rid of religious fear & guilty feelings by make believing their god has forgiven them.

Sure religion has had some positive side effects on society but I still think it sucks.

I am satisfied that our Constitutional Laws enforced by our Government, States and Counties are more than adequate. We do not need any kind of Religious Laws for anything.

It was of use one time when the masses were uneducated and weakminded and you could control them with fear. But it doesn't serve a purpose other than story telling now....

Most, if not all, of the positives of a given religion can be achieved without the religion.
