I swear I've seen at least 5 questions today asking what to get their children for Christmas! Are parents so uninvolved with their children they have no clue what they want? What happened to sitting down with your kids and having them make out a wish list? My family was dysfunctional and they still knew what to get me for Christmas....
I know...MAYBE GET OFF THE COMPUTER, SPEND SOME TIME WITH YOUR KIDS AND ASK THEM WHAT THEY WANT!
Geez.

I'm single with no children and I live 1500 miles away from my immediate family. That is why I'm not with them right now.

Most of these answers make sense, like the autism and obsolete lists. That's completely understandable. I just don't know why you would ask a complete stranger and how they would know what YOUR child wants better than you would.

Some of us dont have the luxury of having a child that can speak or communicate well so some people have to ask what a child would like at a certain age. My 6 year old for example can not speak because of autism but is able to function and play ect. so I would probably be one of these people who would ask such a question.

they arent listening
the are unapproachable so the kid doesnt ask
they decide for the kid what they want/should have despite their request
they are negative and uncaring
some reasons
just because kids "want everything" you can still help them choose what is most special. Of course your child wants everything... we arent born with the ability to decision make. You can hold two pieces of candy in front of an adult and they will weigh out which will taste better, which looks better, what the long term result may be, if they need the extra sugar right now, if they're allergic or not etc etc etc but you hold up two pieces of candy in front of a child and, naturally, they say BOTH! It's a learning process. Just becuase you're overwhelmed with the amount of things your child wants doesn't mean you can't use this time to help them pick out certain items, but don't just fill in the blank (with younger children). when they get older they'll be able to choose but YOU have to be welcoming and open. Not say "you don't need that" etc etc etc

I hate asking people what they want for presents. Then there is no surprise. I would rather ask Y!A users or other adults I know what would be a good present, so I have some ideas to surprise the kids. Otherwise, I'm not really a gift giver, I'm just a toy delivery service.

Well, since you don't have kids, you don't understand.
Kids either want everything they see. Or they change their minds very quickly. You can buy them a barbie because a week ago they were dying to have it, but once you give it to them, they'll throw it down and forget about it.
I find it hard to buy something for anyone for christmas. That's why I always ask what they want and I hate it when they're like "I don't knooow!"
Yes, you can ask your kids what they want and they will give you a list of stuff they want, but half of that list will turn into things they don't want a few days after they get it.

Well, you have to understand maybe there is not good communication in some families. Maybe they don't want to just openly ask their children what they want and maybe surprise them. So you don't need to look at everybody elses faults and maybe look at your own, like maybe why you are on the computer and not out with your family.

Because most of them say they want everything they see. My son is 3 and I already know what I am getting for his major "Santa" present, but he has already been looking at a catalog and says "I want that and that and that." 15 things on the same page.

It's mainly because kids are so fickle! They change their minds on a dime OR they want only things you can't afford.

Todays parents are clueless.
They don't know how to discipline, feed or be a parent.
They want to be their kids friend when they should be the parent.. they need to instill respect.
