My roommate and I were going to buy gerbils. Being the people we are, we ended up impulsively buying a cat.

We live in the dorms at a small private college where animals - even gerbils - are illegal to have in the dorms. Being the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type people we are, we ignored this rule.

We've had our cat for two days now and it has been going alright, but she won't keep quiet. People have heard her in the halls.

HOW DO WE HIDE AN ILLEGAL CAT IN THE DORM ROOMS?

ps: do you think getting a second cat would help?

Honestly, this was incredibly irresponsible of your and your roommate. First of all, why on earth would you "buy" a cat when there are MILLIONS of them waiting for loving homes in shelters across the country? Oh I know why? Because no animal shelter would be stupid enough to allow two college students living in a dormitory to adopt one of their cats!

Secondly, what makes you think you're not going to get caught? You WILL. Believe me. The only one who's going to suffer is that poor cat being uprooted, rehomed, or worse, ending up in a homeless shelter on death row herself. If you're not willing to live up to your responsibility of pet ownership (which for a cat can be up to 20 years!), then you need to return the cat from where you purchased it, or beg and plead to another family member to take care of it for you. All I can say if poor kitty. Learn from your mistakes. Never take the life of a living, breathing, feeling creature for granted. It's a committment and a privilege to share your life with a pet. It's not something to be taken lightly. Foolish. Shame on you guys. Grow up!

Is the cat fixed? If not, it might be meowing for that reason; in particular, females in heat can be very noisy. If it's bored and lonely, it needs more company - another cat might help but then you have *TWO* cats you're not supposed to have. I'd suggest looking for a family member or friend who can adopt the cat - preferably somewhere not too far away so you can visit it. Once the management gets word you have a cat, they'll insist you get rid of it anyway, so you might as well start looking now.

Whatever you do, *DON'T* just dump the poor thing outside - you can't imagine how many cats get abandoned by college students and how much suffering that causes.

A second cat will keep her company but they wont exactly stay quiet either.

This is gonna be an ongoing problem for you all Cause apparently you havent had cats before.

Its a BIG responsibility because you cant cage a cat like you would a gerbil. Youre gonna end up very sad if you dont give her up to a home she can be comfortable in.

Good luck!

You can't hide an "illegal" cat in a dorm..it will be heard/found out (as it already has been). You need to give the cat to someone that can care for it and give it a wonderful home..obviously the two or (?) of you can't handle the responsibility now..wait till you are out of college and have a real place of your own..only fair to the cat afterall.

I agree with Alleycat.
For college kids, you guys are, well, trying too hard to be cool. The really cool thing to do was to adopt from a shelter, or better yet, to know that having ANY kind of animal as a pet is a HUGE responsiblity. It's fun, silly, foolish, poo and pee and tail-wagging and purring---but also involves giving them food, water, medicines, check ups, space to roam around in, time to play with, and love. I live in a neighborhood with so many backyard dog breeders and dead stray cats flattened on the road. I can't believe I have to read about college kids trying to be cool with an illegal cat in the dorm.

Your cat will start to want to mate at 5-6 months of age, you'll want to have it spayed/neutered. Do not give it milk or chocolate. If you want to be cool and try giving it chocolate specifically because you read it here, you should know that cruelty to animals is one of the signs of homicidal individuals.

If you come to your senses and realize an illegal cat is a bad idea, I urge you not to give it to any of your friends, especially if they're as cool as you. Just give it to a shelter.

I hope to God that cat will learn what happiness is in its lifetime. Please do not make it suffer.

As you have found out, you cannot hide a cat nor can you hide two. Either find another place to live or find a good home for this cat as you owe it to her. As college students it's normal to be impulsive but you must cool your jets when it comes to taking in pets when it is not allowed.

Heck, get 5 or 6. The college will love it if you have a whole pack.
