part of it has even chipped off beside the filling.
orajel and other things like salt water etc dont work, the only thing that makes it feel better is swishing ice cold water in my mouth, but that's only for 10-20 seconds, then it has to be repeated.
it's been hurting for 2 days and i cant see my dentist for another 2 as she is out of town!! she prescribed T3's and an antibiotic over the phone which i started today, but the T3's don't seem to be doing anything for me and the antibiotic takes days to become effective.
my question is does the constant cold water make it worse because now when i stop it, it hurts 10x more, but i cant stop cause it's the only thing that (temp) heps!

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years. The Tylenol 3's are not strong enough if you have a nerve involvement. You need Vicodin or Percossette. Call her back and get a stronger pain med. Stop the cold water and get clove oil. Take a very small cotton pellet, dip in oil and place carefully on open cavity. This will put the nerve to sleep for a few hours at a time. The vicodin will stop the pain so you can sleep until you can see your dentist. If the pain is that bad, go to the local ER and get better pain relief even if it only for 2 days. It sounds like you may need a root canal with this much pain the antibiotics will kick in in 24 hours. In the mean time, sleep with an extra pillow and don't eat or chew on that side. You can take an extra T3 until you get better pain relief and for the most part, this is not very effective with nerve pain. Vicodin will help you sleep and stop the pain until you can see you general dentist. Please don't wait, it will only get worse and the ER will give you percosette so you can be more comfortable and please say, severe pain, so you will get the attention you need. If you have any other questions, please ask. I don't understand why your dentist does not have a covering doctor, I ALWAYS do just for this reason. Please get help now. If you have any other questions, pelase ask.

Go to another dentist. Usually whenever my dentist is out of town he has an associate dentist that he recommends his patients to go to in an emergency. If he won't be back for 3 weeks then you'll have to suffer through Thanksgiving--do you really want that? I suggest to just go to another dentist and get the tooth refilled. Good Luck!! I know, tooth pain is the WORST pain in the world.

Cold water making a tooth feel better is a classic sign that you need a root canal--and soon! It won't start to feel better until you get the root canal started. The cold water won't make it any worse off because the tooth is already sick. Find a dentist or endodontist (root canal specialist) ASAP and get things going. Good luck to you! (Sorry about the pain!)

HELLO,
THIS IS A CLASSIC SITUATION WHEN THE NERVE IN THE TOOTH IS ACTING UP.
TYLENOL 3 MAY NOT EASE THE PAIN. START TAKING ADVIL, 3-4 TABS EVERY 4-6 HOURS. SEE THE DENTIST A.S.A.P. THIS NEEDS A ROOT CANAL.
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING HOT. ICE WATER MAKES IT FEEL BETTER BECAUSE THE COLD BRINGS DOWN THE SWELLING OF THE NERVE THAT CAUSES THE PAIN. I'VE HAD PATIENTS COME TO THE OFFICE BRINGING ICE WATER WITH THEM, I KNOW INSTANTLY WHAT'S WRONG.

I would call another dentist Monday morning. You may have an abscess and need further treatment. Keep ice packs on the outside of your mouth (cheek) for any swelling. If the pain continues and you can't wait until Monday go to your closest Emergency Room.
Good luck

Get a bottle of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE at the drug store.
Swish with it several times a day. It kills pain and bubbles any debris out of the area. This should help till the Dentist gets back.

Clove oil is the best home remedy for toothaches. Even dentists use it. I found the information at http://aches.in/toothacheremedies.html useful
