Copies of Prior Year Federal Tax Returns and/or a Transcript
Most taxpayers will ask for a copy of their prior year tax return. In many cases, however, a transcript will provide the information they need more quickly. Transcripts provide taxpayers with a computer-created record of their tax return which includes most of the line-items as filed with the IRS, including any accompanying forms and schedules. The transcript does not reflect any changes the taxpayer, his/her representative, or the IRS made after the return was filed.
To download Form 4506 (Request for Copy of Tax Return) or Form 4506T (Request for Transcript of Return), refer the taxpayer to this IRS.gov webpage. IMPORTANT: See note below.
To request copies by phone, refer the taxpayer to the IRS Special Hotline for taxpayers affected by recent hurricanes and combat zone individuals: 1-866-562-5227 (Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday-Friday, your local time - except Alaska and Hawaii which are Pacific time.)
If the taxpayer used a professional preparer to prepare the prior year's return, he/she can request a copy of the return from the preparer. If they need help locating the preparer, the Electronic Return Originator data base may help.
To request copies in person, you may refer taxpayers to the nearest IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC).
For practitioners only – E-services (if enrolled)
Note: Taxpayers should write HURRICANE KATRINA or GO Zone in red letters across the top of the form to expedite processing and waive any applicable fees. For copies of returns, expect 2-3 weeks for delivery. For copies of transcripts expect 7-10 days for delivery.

IRS records are destroyed after 10 years. To get those years, use for 4506-T and allow 60 days. For the electronic copies, no fee; for copies of paper returns actually filed, $39 per year.
The Social Security Administration has the work history records for all years since they are used to calculate retirement benefits. Contact them for a detailed earnings history (there is a fee).

You can get an information returns document (Forms W-2, 1099, 1098) for the past six years by calling IRS and asking. This is as far back as they have records readily available and as far back as they normally seek delinquent returns. For older wage information, you should receive a Social Security statement annually that shows wages earned.

Step a million: Have the different individual acquire the tax information. Step 2: Have the different individual provide you a replica of the tax information won by way of the different individual. in case you meant the technique for paying for the information promptly from the government, without the cooperation of the different individual, you may't try this. not even the President can do it. by means of fact of abuses by way of the Nixon administration (1969-1974), they replaced the policies interior the 1970's so as that no person, not even the President, can get somebody else's tax information without their cooperation.

The social security records will show you the total amount of income you paid social security tax on for each year, but not necessarily the total amount of wages you earned, and won't show what income tax you paid.
IRS records don't go back that far. They can only provide info up to 10 years old.
