I am staying in the Times Square area coming into Penn Station. I will be there for approx. 30 hours before I board the train again. I am going there by myself (on my way to Oregon to be with my family for Christmas). I have tickets to see the Rockette's so far on my first day and I'm going on the Sex & The City tour the next day. I haven't decided if I will try to see a Broadway play (that is if they aren't on strike still) while I'm there - will play that by year. I don't know of any good places to eat in that area (inexpensive, but good, that will accommodate someone by themselves and not geared just towards couples or larger parties). I was thinking about going on the Lights tour at night too. I've been told to definitely window shop the department stores for their displays. I don't intend on going out of this area really either with the short time I have in the city. Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

Oh, and I'm fine with eating by myself - just didn't want to go to obvious places that cater to couples or larger parties, especially at night. I will be there on a Wednesday/Thursday too. Thanks.

Not so much into museums, but I will take all suggestions into consideration. My two things so far are in the middle of the afternoon the first day and the morning/afternoon the 2nd day. After the SATC tour, I'm headed back to Penn Station for my train.

I don't know if the Circle Line tour runs in the winter, but that's kinda neat (you get to see the whole island from the water...goes past the Statue of Liberty, etc. good skylines, but it's like half a day, so if you don't really want all that, it's not such a great idea.)
Of course, there's Broadway (provided the strike gets resolved) and Ballet and Opera, Lincoln Center, the Park and zoo. Skating at Rockefeller Center is always a great idea.
And then there's the museums!!!
Don't be afraid to eat by yourself any place you feel inclined to...just make it part of your life. I find myself travelling alone and I just go with it.

Go to Build-a-Bear
Take a limo ride at night through NYC in Manhattan
See a Broadway
Walk around during the day
Go see The Rockafeller Center
See Macy's
Go shopping (there's good deals)
See Central Park during the day.
Eat Sushi.
Take Pictures.
See the statue of liberty
See Ground Zero.
Ride in taxi's when you have to.
Finally the best advice I can give you is, you are only there once so enjoy yourself, see as much of the city as you can, and have fun.

There's a famous eat in deli next to the Ed Sullivan Theater on Seventh Avenue and I think 53rd Street. There you get a sandwich mountain high with your favorite cold cuts. As far as things to do for a day, read the Sunday NYTimes art and leisure section. Filled with information.
