I recently had an argument about religious belief with a friend, and he said that he believed in God because it made him feel better. When I questioned his reasoning process, he said that it didn't matter if it was true as long as it made him feel better about the world. Obviously this sounded ridiculous, but I couldn't verbalize why. Why is the truth so important to us?

If we spend our lived believing in something and living our lives to that degree and it turns out to not be the truth, then we have wasted our lives. It is naturally put in us to seek out the truth for our eternal destinies depend on wether we have found it or not.

Prior to WW2 many Germans, Austrians, and Italians believed Hitler was telling the truth and was a man out for the good of humanity. It didn't take long before they realized that he spoke lies, but some never learned and followed his hatred til the end. This is an example of why it is important to know the truth. Those that just look for what makes them happy may severely err.

Christ stated "I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life..."

The search for truth helps mankind survive. Take evolution for example, its discovery lead to the development of influenza vaccinations. Had Charles Darwin not searched for the reason behind life’s diversity we would not have flu vaccinations today. In October of 2008 a scientist at the Catalina Sky Survey spotted an asteroid that eventually exploded above the Nubian Desert in Sudan. The significance in this particular sighting is it is the first time in history that an asteroid has been tracked from its initial discovery to its explosion over the desert. Within minutes, its trajectory was calculated and it was determined that the asteroid would enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists and government officials around the world were mobilized. Advisories were sent to many agencies, including the aviation industry so air traffic could be diverted from the asteroid’s path. The search for the truth about how the natural universe works makes things like this possible. The truth helps mankind survive.

Most of my life up until I gave my life to God through His son Jesus Christ,I felt empty inside.searching for love and security I got married real young and had children. But that wasn't enough I know there was something missing in my life. I wanted the truth about my life,God, and the world. I finally found what I was searching for! Jesus is the truth!!!
We need the truth so we can know what our purpose is for being alive here on earth. We need the truth about God so we can know Him like He knows us! I could say alot more.

It entirely depends on which 'truth' you choose to believe. Truth in this sense is un-important, as one person's truth is another person's myth.

Your friend has told you the truth as he sees it - he needs this belief, as many others need it.

Desire for truth is what seperates adults from young children. Young children are quite content to believe in fairy tales but grown ups usually need more. Not all grown ups though.

Sadly, many Christians do not understand why they believe what they believe. I believe in God because He is real. It is not my belief that makes Him real.
And if faith is all about feelings then where is the commitment? Christians do not always 'feel' saved. It is a matter of believing, not feeling.

"The Truth shall set you free."

First a human must through "Wisdom" understand just what the "Truth" is!

We are swimming in an ocean of illusion!
