As many as it takes for them to hurt the next day. You want your stomach to feel it. Generally, stomach muscles do not take as long to recover as other muscles in your body. So, feel free to train them, often. You also want to make sure you work ALL of your ab muscles. The basic sit-up really only works your upper abs. Do some homework and you will find tons of ways to tighten every muscle in your stomach.

Ditch the sit ups. Do crunches and leg lifts as the top 40% of a sit up does not help your abs. Sets of 12- 30, 2 or 3 to start and add more every third day. I was up to 280 a day.

As many as you can do without causing physical harm. But work up to it. See how many you can do easily and continue with that number for a few days. Then add some and do that many for a week. Then add more and do them for a week.
Eventually you will reach a number of situps that cause you stress. Which is probably the max you should do, assuming you just want to stay in tune. Bulking up will require increasing that number a bit more.

well, do twenty situps a day, but that wont be the only thing to do to tighten, well u need to stop eating white bread for 6 weeks, then u will tighten up alout more than just doing sit ups alone.

I find planks to be the best and quickest way to tone up.
Try pyramids...
60 seconds in a face down plank position, rest, 60 seconds on your left side, then your right. I do three sets of each. You will be shaking by the end!
Hope this helps!

I started with 3 sets of 50 crunch situps with hands supporting the head, not pulling. I moved slowly up to 80, and now 100 three times (pretty easy really if you keep at it.)

Try this program.
Pick a day,(1st,15th,a holiday,etc).
Do "one" sit up,next day do two, next day do three, etc.
Each day add one sit up,in a month you will be up to 30,in two months about 60.
Keep it up as long as you wish.Right around 90 skip a day between sessions for muscle recovery.
Have fun,Hope this helps.
