I would say there's no clear correlation between altruism and being religious. The only difference is that non-religious people are not expected to be very loving, while religious people sometimes end up looking like hypocrites because of high expectations.

I think the non-religious can show un-conditional love without motive. The non-religious often do it for a variety of self-preserving reasons, like going to heaven and avoiding hell, but the non-religious can show love without any prior agenda.
The religious will always have the shadow of that guilt-factor or fear-factor behind their actions. If I love my daughter and my friends, I have no reason to other than because I do.

I think the religious show more love, but perhaps I'm biased. ON the other hand, religious people are supposed to be loving toward people in general, in so doing they are worshiping God.
When non-religious people show love to someone outside their close friends and family, it's because they want to for it's own sake. So is love for the love of God more valuable than love for it's own sake?

me, having grown up in an atheist family, i think that both show love.
for some reason people think atheist dont, they are just people like everyone else. Only because someone is atheist doesnt make him/her mean and not loving.
and then there are religious people that are very loving as well.
both are.

i dont have a religion, but i am spiritual.
I must say that before i became spiritual, i was no way, as loving, caring and giving as i am now.
I am a much better person now i am spiritual. I love my soul, and i don't think you can be 100% giving to someone if you don't know or love your own soul.
Hope that makes sense!

love - which is supposed to see through the barriers of religion should be shown as what 1 Corinthians 13 describes:
1 Corinthians 13:1-8
(1) Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
(2) And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
(3) And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
(4) Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
(5) Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
(6) Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
(7) Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
(8) Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

I would have to say religious because they represent a belief of a higher power and not of this earth.
Nonreligious people who show love usually expect a earthly prize for it such as sex, money, house keeping, etc.
Where spiritual people might have the same inclination as the non religious people the also add to the equation something that cannot be measured on this earth only at death which is why they presumably would go the extra mile.

Religious people can love or hate in all degrees, just like non-religious people.

I don't know about love. However, and in general, I have noticed that the atheists behave better than the theists.
