My family is recently trying to do the same thing.
I have listed below some sites that have been helpful.
If you are looking for a place to put up your family tree, go to www.geni.com They let you build one online and it is very easy to do with the format they have. You can even print out the tree instantly!
Good luck with your search.

I received an email not to long ago that military records will be put on familysearch.org in the near future. This is a free website. If you order records from the national archives they are now $75.00. So be patient

Draft records are not quite the same as military records.

http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ww1/draft/search.cgi
has some for free. 15% of them, it looks like. Not enough people volunteered to transcribe them for free. You can try.

If you don't find who you are looking for, you could try posting the name, county, state and age of who you are looking for. Smeone with an Ancestry subscription might look him up for you.

How about: www.military .com. That should spread out to many other sites as well.
