We moved into a basement apartment and the laundry room is on our floor. The landlord told us that we could not use the laundry room and that we had to go down the street the laundromat. The people upstairs on the main floor get to use this laundry room. In fact, I get to hear them taking advantage of this eminity as it's right next to our door.
Yesterday my daughter was sick and threw up all over her blankets. Since it was night the laundromat was closed, and I wouldn't drag my daughter all the way down there when she was vomiting anyway, I used the laundry machine to wash her blankets.
Was I wrong to do this, or is this arrangement with the landlord just too bizarre?

Yes, the people upstairs can use the laundry room but we can't.
We can't use the backyard either, but that's another story.

I don't really think you should have your daughter living in those conditions but what you did wasn't wrong and yes your landlord sounds both cruel and unusual.

Sounds like maybe you should find another apartment? Your landlord is very odd in not letting you use the laundry room just because you happen to have gotten an apartment on the floor on which it is located. And no, what you did was not wrong. It would have been wrong of you to have not washed your daughter's blanket.
You should talk with your landlord and ask him to give you a reason why you can't use the laundry room or the backyard.

You were wrong ,the agreement when you moved in was that you cannot use the laundry room. If you wanted to use it, you should have discussed the issue with him upon your first meeting with him..... I would like to suggest, at this point, that you have a talk with your landlord and ask if you can use the laundry room and the back yard. Find out what it will cost as opposed to the cost of the laundromat (Do your homework first, figure out the expenses) If it is less to pay the landlord than of course do it.,that's if he gives his o.k.....The back yard would be nice since you have a child but if the landlord will not let you use it, do your research and find the closest park...

Being assertive like I am, I would inquire as to just why are you being omitted from using the laundry room.

Other than that.. you gotta do what you gotta do..I prolly would have done the same, and dared the landlord to say otherwise.

Like I said, I would be asking for some valid answers..

Good luck...

wait hold up, the people on the main floor get to us the washer and you cant? well thats not right. and assuming that your daughter is young and was sick i dont think that what you did was all that wrong. if it was my kid id have done the same thing. as long as you dont do that all the time i think your landlord should just let this one slide

No it was not morally wrong of you to wash the blankets. It was an emergency, and you meant no harm to anyone.

Just forget it and move on. You didnt rob an old lady or rob a convenience store, ok. You used a washing machine. Yes it violated your landlords agreement; but it is FORGIVEABLE.

They most likely pay for use of the
laundry room, and back yard.

For you to use the laundry room to
would make the water bill higher.

You were wrong, but maybe you
could ask your landlord about it.
Maybe the Washer / dryer aren't his.

You didn't have much choice in that circumstance. I would ask about the arrangement, though.
