Hello, I am going to take a safety class and go hunting withing the next year or so. I looked in a pamphlet and was interested in hunter smaller game (not bunnies and stuff), and there was the Marten. I want to go after one but there was nothing about hunting it. All it had was trapping for it. Is it possible to hunt them (with a gun) without needing to trap them?

Martens are a small rodent like animal related to the Weasel family. They only way they are bagged is thru trapping not hunting with any firearm. In addition depending where you live, Martens are a Protected Species under state laws and can't even be trapped let alone hunted...There used to be a market for the Martens fur for making expensive fur coats, but since they are not in such demand, most Martens that are used for this purpose are farm raised.... If you don't like the idea of shooting "bunnies and stuff" This is one you should add to your list on non-game animals....There are no states that I know of that allow conventional firearms hunting of these animals nor are there any seasons except those few states that allow them to be trapped. I think hunting these fascinating creatures would be a mistake......not to mention illegal. There are plenty of other game animals that can be legally hunted AND eaten...........

YOu would't want to "hunt them conventionally" with a gun, as you would damage the pelt (fur). I don;t belive they have any meat/game quality, so you really wouldn't want to kill them if not eatng them or skinning them, other wise it is just murder.

I believe they're protected from hunting.

Besides, they are pretty much nocturnal.
