My husband and I are at odds on when our son, who is 2 1/2, is ready for a regular drinking cup. I think he does very well for his age when drinking out of his small, lidless cups, and I really don't want to start back with the sippy cups. My husband hates that our son spills his cups once in a while because of the messes. He usually knocks them over, but he drinks just fine with one or both hands. He spills it a few times a week, maybe 3 to 4 times a week. We have hardwood floors, so I'm not too worried about it because it's easy to clean up but it drives my husband crazy. I've already thrown out all of his sippy cups (did it before my husband came home from deployment because I didn't think he'd have a problem with it) and I really don't want to get my son back on them.
Your opinion?

My son loves his cups too. He picked them out and gets to pick which color he wants (part of our color teaching) each time. I just think hubby is frustrated with having to pick up messes.

Your husband needs to understand that your child is 21/2 and will make messes. I agree with you, he needs to learn how to drink out of a regular cup and while he is doing this he will spill things. Your husband just needs to be patient. And if you have already thrown away the sippy cups, then you're teaching your son its okay to go back and that is not something you want to do. Good luck!

I think you're right. Your husband needs to realize that in order to learn, your son is going to spill. After all, how did he learn to feed himself with a spoon and fork? If he doesn't let your son learn, he'll be drinking from a sippy cup at his own wedding.
My son started sipping from an open cup at about 9 months and using one most of the time (except during trips, etc) by 18 months, so there's no reason your son can't start using an open cup.

well, I am starting to break my kids from the sippy cups now. They are 4 and 5. I don't regret wating this long because we live in an apartment with really light colored carpet.
I think if he can drink that well out of a regular cup and you have already gotten rid of all the sippy cups I would just stick with that. Tell your hubby that you do not want him to revert back to the baby like behaviour. Surely he can understand that.
Good Luck!

I would let him keep using a regular cup, he'll never learn the coordination required if he's not able to practice. Kids make messes, it's part of life. I'd say he's doing very well for a little guy! My daughter is 17 months and I've been giving her a regular cup. She has 2 older brothers & has to have what they do. Yep, there's a mess now and then, but she's doing pretty good too. I'd just leave him be, if he like his regular cups, I'd just let him use them.

At 2 1/2 he is ready and even though occasionally he spills..well, don't we all?? He is fine!
He will never learn if he isn't allowed to make a mistake. :)
I hope your husband will cut him some slack and let him be the toddler that he is! You should be proud that he adjusted to the cup so quickly and so well!
Congrats!

Stay with regular cups. We all spill from time to time. Young children get distracted and their coordination is not always the best but it will get better with time. Your husband wouldnt put him back in diapers for an occasional accident would he?

I say stick with the regular drinking cups. My son pours the drink on himself while trying to take a drink so he's not ready yet.

he's no longer too youthful, yet he will have lots of spills with the prevalent (nonsippy) cups. it relatively is definitely a large thought to have him drink out of prevalent cups, basically messy. Sippy cups with straws are greater valuable than the prevalent sippy cups, and generally the subsequent step. there is not any reason to pass from straw cups to prevalent sippy cups.
