Meditation, in one form or another, is a part of many faiths including Christianity. As said elsewhere, it's listening rather than speaking. In a Christian context, it's best done over a passage of Scripture or a particularly illuminating passage in a book by a solidly grounded author.
Channeling is something else again and I wouldn't recommend it for a Christian. From what I've read, heard and seen, it's an attempt to contact other spirits, much in the same way a medium tries to contact the dead. It has its roots in pagan practices.
Now the Bible teaches that there are lots of unseen spirits out there and, from what I've experienced, I'd say that was true. Most of the ones you're likely to contact are either deceptive or subtly hostile -- that is, the damage they do to you isn't readily apparent. On occasion, I've been clearly aware of their behind-the-scenes influence, even tho I'm not trying to contact them.
As for the spirits loyal to God (angels), they're around and active too. But I don't know that it does any good to try and 'channel' them. If one needs to contact you directly, it will.
All of which is probably too metaphysical and supernatural for a lot of people on this site, but that's my experience.

Daily meditation is a wonderful tool to help center your chakras and clear your mind, and yes -- it helps with stress and brings you closer to deity, can put you in touch with your spirit guides, etc.
Intuitive thought and channeling are also used for the benefit of ourselves and others. It always amazes me when people don't want you to learn any more about yourself and the world around you because "you're not supposed to". Why? (Because you're easier to manipulate if you only know what you're told.)
I could tell you of the greatest meditation CDs and companion book that will teach you more about yourself and your world than you ever thought possible, but I will tell you this: it speaks of both the God and Goddess, Spirit Guides, etc. If interested, contact me.

Which type spirit-instruction manual have you ever been finding out? somewhat some human beings used to choose for the crimson-Indian variety, you could try channeling those after dark. Meditate on a style of '3 wolf moon' T-shirts and notice if one is available. in any different case, you ought to objective for an historical Egyptian priest. Get some African stuff, bongo drums will do for a initiate, and in line with possibility some Tiki-bar stuff it is not African yet seems ethnic and the mask and issues will in all likelihood be ok. photos of cobras and such like, you may get from an asian food market. Joss-sticks are fantastic. they are pass-cultural so some distance as spirit-classes pass, like those little bowls crammed with peanuts at a party, they are extra or much less common and predicted. another element that's important - artwork annoying at your Ouija board. some human beings say those are for babies, yet they are lacking the factor! they actually artwork better once you placed the light fixtures out in case you have a load of babies in contact.

Meditation can indeed bring you closer to your God. It has often been said that Prayer is the act of TALKING to the Divine, while Meditation is the act of LISTENING to the Divine.
I find that meditation DOES help me with stress and when I am meditating on aspects of my Gods, it does bring me closer as I can understand them better afterwards.
There are many means of meditation including focussing on a particular line of scripture for the purpose of understanding it or simply stilling the mind to let the "still, small voice" on the wind be heard. If you are comfortable with attempting one of these forms, I would say to try it.

Meditation has to be learned. You focus on breathing deeply and quieting your mind. You can tense your stomach muscles when you breath in, and relax them when you breath out. It should eventually relax your body. You can focus on a feeling you need to get more comfortable with, on one single thought or purpose, that is important to you, or even on God. Mind-body exercises are good to make you stronger spiritually. Both meditaion and mind-body exercises increase one's intuition. You have to be taught mind-body exercises. But, you could do a simple one. Walk slowly, breathing in with one step and out with the next. Then try to do this with a slight crouch[just enought to tighten stomach muscles] for two steps, followed by two steps that are very relaxed. This makes two steps with some extra tension, followed by two steps that are like relaxed recovery steps. You can focus your mind, on being more in harmony with God, or clearing away the negative emotions you are burdened with. This is all complicated, but you can look for people that teach mind-body techniques or meditation to help you.
