I've always wanted my tongue pierced. But I'm concerned about the bad effects it may have. Anybody have any good advice about getting my tongue pierced?

if you're pierced wrong you could bleed to death, if it gets infected you could die because of the proximity of your brain and tongue (infection travels through the many veins in your tongue), metal balls chip your teeth, you can't eat solid food for 14 days or kiss, smoke and drink, pain isn't so bad though

Yes it is true if you are incorrectly pierced you could be injured, you could chip your teeth if you cant behave with your jewlery, and you could develop bad breath if you're gross and dont ever clean your tongue ring. BUT if you take care of your piercing these things are highly unlikely to happen.

The first step to having a good tongue piercing experience is to choose a great piercer. Not the cheapest piercer. Not the closest piercer. A GREAT piercer. You may have to visit a couple of shops until you find someone that you are comfortable with. You need someone who is knowledgable and really cares about doing the job right. Once you have a piercer you like, you can start working on getting pierced.

When you are pierced, it will hurt a bit. It isnt excruciating, but it will be sore and swollen for a couple of days. To help this eat plenty of ice and take some ibuprofen. Make absolutely sure that you are cleaning your piercing as you were instructed. This is the step that many people skip and they end up with an infection. If you clean as you are instructed you will not end up with an infection.

If you find the cleaning is disrupting your mouth, immediately go back to your piercer and ask about other methods. Don't sit on Answers and let people tell you to use rubbing alchohol or toilet bowl cleaner or whatever else they come up with. Go to your piercer or a reputable piercing care website and get a technique that doesnt irritate you. Cleaning is a must, but there are several ways to do it. As long as you are dilligent, you will be fine.

After your piercing heals, get jewlery that fits. Your initial bar will be extra long to allow for swelling. After your swelling has gone down (usually around 2 weeks), change it (or have your piercer change it) to something shorter. Not everyone's mouth needs the same length barbell. Most of us wear a 5/8" bar. This is what is sold at the mall and the standard length for barbells. If this turns out to be too long or too short, go to a piercer and get fitted for the correct length. You can always screw the balls off of tongue rings you like and onto the bar that actually fits your mouth. Improperly fitted jewlery can chip your teeth, rub your gums or pinch your tongue. So get something that works for your body.

To help avoid chipped and worn teeth, NEVER play with your tongue ring. It is NOT there for you to chew on, gnaw, fiddle with, flick or do anything else with. It is for DECORATION. Not a chew toy. If you develop a habbit of chewing it can wear your teeth right down in record time.

Learn to position your tongue ring so it doesnt rub your gums. It may be easy to let the bottom ball sit on the gums at the back of your teeth, but DON'T. Any place that your tongue ring rubs can be subject to erosion. Teach your tongue to lay someplace that keeps your jewlery safe on the floor of your mouth. This sounds a little strange, but really it just takes a couple of days of being aware of where your jewlery is sitting and putting it back in the place you want it. Well worth the effort.

Learn to speak with your tongue ring. If you hear it clicking against your teeth, you are in danger of chipping them. You never know when it will happen, but it is a risk. Pay attention to how you are using your mouth to form syllables and find ways to do it without your jewlery hitting your teeth. Getting a great fitting tongue ring will help with this issue, but you still need to take the extra step and keep yourself out of harm's way.

To keep from having skanky tongue ring breath, clean the darn thing. After your piercing is completely healed you can brush the barbell while its in your tongue or you can take it out and scrub it off. Swish with a good mouth rise and let it get into your piercing. Make sure you get all toothpaste and mouthwash back OUT of your piercing when you are finished cleaning. While your piercing is still healing, you will be doing PLENTY of cleaning, so dont worry about this step until it is healed.

If all of this seems like three times as much work as anyone has ever mentioned, you're probably right. Most people don't understand that a tongue ring takes commitment and practice to live with. This is why gum damage and chipped teeth are so common. Tongue rings do require special care, but it won't be more trouble than it is worth. If you put the effort into caring for your piercing, it will live with you happily.

Pain depends on the person. I personally did not feel it, but my friend cried when she had hers pierced.

Please dont. It can have bad consequences. And all the ones I have talked to seem to have bad breath from the bacteria trapped in there. that cant be a good thing.
