Maybe you could let her plan the whole day.. like ask her where she wants to eat and maybe if she wanted to see a movie or just go to toys r us or minature golf? Just tell her its totally up to her and the whole family will do what she wants cause its her special day. You could tell her a week ahead of time so has time to think and plan?

Wow not one mention of your DIL.. i'm impressed! Why not organise a special tea? I know it's not quite the same but for my 18th my parents got a cake from Tesco with a photo of me as a baby turned into the icing (if that makes sense). Why not do the same for your grandson? Have some party nibbles (crisps, cake.. it's only your birthday once a year, why not 'splash out'?). Also, why not have a 'movie' night (well maybe not a film seeing as you've only got three hours, but something along those lines) - get a duvet and cuddle up on the sofa with some nibbles (i.e. popcorn), with the lights off to make it 'exciting'. As for teaching card games, in all honesty I don't think that would appeal to a ten year old lad, especially on his birthday. (My grandmother also teaches us card games!). As for board games, that sounds like fun. Why not Monopoly? There's a 'modern' version now I think, with credit cards instead of paper money. That might appeal, being in charge of his own credit card! Whatever you end up doing with him i'm sure he will appreciate it. Don't worry about the paintballing - it's messy stuff, therefore he will LOVE it. So just concentrate on the evening you have with him. Good luck, and I hope he enjoys his birthday :)!

Although letting "her" plan the day sounds good think about what she really might say. You should plan the entire day yourself and tell her that we're all going to take you out to several different places of fun. Take her to the zoo, putt putt golf, Chuckee Cheese or other arcade place for children, to a movie, out to eat, pottery class, a painting class, plant a little garden for her room. Then for dinner bake her a beautiful cake and give her the gifts she has always wanted. Good Luck. If she has friends include them or throw her a suprise party.

Go to a kid-friendly restaurant and let her pick out any dish she wants. Make sure the restaurant sings happy birthday to kids and you can either let them provide the dessert or go get a birthday cake with her name on it, bring it to the restaurant and let the staff bring it out with candles and all. I think she would like that. Or, depending on where you live, take her to an amusement park or some place she's been wanting to go for a long time.

If you're not squeemish about the germs, the 4 yr old is at a perfect age for a petting zoo.
Or, how about a trip to the park where you can rake up leaves and they can jump around in them? Kids LOVE that and it makes for great pictures.

How about a family outing to a zoo or children's museum. Have her wear a t-shirt or button that says its her birthday & everyone will make a big fuss over her all day. If you go out to lunch/dinner, most places will sing happy birthday & bring her a dessert. She will feel like a celebrity all day long!
