I am mom to an elderly DSH tabby cat. She is very affectionate. I give her both canned food and prescription dry. I have had to change the type of canned food I give her several times in what seems to be a whacky cycle. She'll love a food I give her and then a few months later, decide, nah, I don't like it anymore. So I'll give her something else, and she'll go bonkers eating it, but a few months later lose her taste for it. So I'll switch to another brand.
Is it unheard of for cats to do this--decide they don't like the brand you've been giving them for several months and want something else?

thejanith--the vet said it was okay to give her normal canned with her prescription dry. She gets different flavors of one brand, but I guess she wants a new brand every few months.

that's completely normal. Some cats gets sick of eating one type of food. Some are more "finicky" than others and whatnot. I have to change my cats food all the time...after a while she just won't eat the food

Cats do this. Your elderly feline is comepletely normal. Since she's on special food, ask your vet first before changing anything. I'd suggest sprinkling (after checking with the vet) a little onion powder (not salt) or garlic powder or paprika on the food to change things up for her. Also, get different flavors of the same brand. That may help.

Yes, just like humans cat's tastebuds change.
I have two cats and for months they loved having fresh macrel and just the sound of me unwrapping it drove them crazy, they would come running to the kitchen but after a while they didnt want it anymore. As the months went on their taste buds have changed. No one wants to eat the samething ALL the time.
Dont worry, nothing is wrong with your kitty.
He's just normal. :)

My cats (I have three) do the same thing! Just like you like variety in what you eat, so do they! There are days that I really want some mexican food, and days when it doesn't sound good and I find myself at McDonalds...either way, variety is good with food...your cat is the same way! Don't stop using stuff that they liked before, either, as they will enjoy that after a while again too!

Yup cats are VERY finicky..try feeding them some leftover steak, and some good food, and suddenly, they develop a TASTE for human food and then are not going to go back to eating pig anus and dried cardboard.

That's fairly common for elderly cats.. Her sense of smell may be starting to fail. Cats really rely on their sense of smell to tell them if they like something.. That could be contributing to her lack of interest in a food she's been eating for awhile..
