My dog knows her name and she knows "come" because if we're in the house she always listens and sometimes when she's outside she listens. But sometimes she'll just completely blow me off and when I try and grab her she runs the other direction! It's incredibly frustrating but I don't know how to fix it. Helpful answers only...I don't want to hear any responses about how it's my fault. Thank you.

Electric collar? Give me a break! And give the dogs a break...train them, don't break them.

I agree with everyone who has said, basically, be consistent. Come means come. Put a long line on, and reel the dog in. And praise, and treats....every single time. The dog needs to be rewarded every time, otherwise what incentive has it for coming back? (Dogs work for reward not for love!)

Good luck. Remember, be fair, be consistent, reward. (And don't try to grab....that is a game in itself....very self rewarding to the dog! )

I don't want to say it because you don't want me to but, it is your falt. When teaching your dog to come ALWAYS reward. If she doesn't come ignore her, go the other direction or toss a ball in the air and continue to ignore her even if she finally decides to come. Make her work for the reward. Your voice (tone) will also make all the difference. When you call her use an "upbeat" tone" in your voice. Sometimes when you don't get the response you have asked for, the tone of your voice gets harsh. Don't let this happen as your dog can tell the difference. Bite your tongue if you have to. Also, when you call her and she does come take a hold of the collar before you reward. This way it will be a "win win situation". After taking hold of the collar reward. A reward can either be a treat or a toy. Taking her to an obedience school would also work wonders. Good luck!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/kZnns

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

It isn't your fault! It's the nature of the beast. (lol) But that being said, it does need to be fixed so that you can keep her safe.

Two great books that can solve this issue and many others as well: The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. Takes you step by step through puppy development. And a no nosense approach to obedience training: The Koehler Method of Dog Training by William R. Koehler. Check out their web site: www.koehlerdogtraining.com They may be able to refer you to a Koehler trainer in your area. If you want a well behaved, well adusted dog this is the answer.

You could not give your dog (or yourself) a better gift. You can probably find both books on Amazon.com or even Ebay. Get going and good luck.

If you're dog knew what "come" means, she would do it! A command that isn't obeyed 100% of the time is a command that is not fully learned yet. I'd get her back on leash and practice a lot. Do lots of recalls on a long leash. Lots of praise and treats involved. You need to proof her in every circumstance, with lots of distractions so that when she hears the "come" command, she immediately comes to you and sits. This command takes a long time to learn completely, so don't give her the opportunity to disobey--it will only reinforce her 'not listening to you' behavior.

Having worked with dogs, and having two of my own (Rottie-Pit mixes,) The mistake many people make is using those words so many times a day, it's a habit, Josh come here! Billy come away from there! Or Oh Come ON! that dogs hear it all the time, even with older dogs you can teach them new commands, to clickers to even whistles and other key noises.

Also remembering you are retraining yourself with your dog too, it does not have to be a choir either, so you are both learning these new commands together, find one word or click or noise for come, as in Come in a different language, you want to work with her every day no destractions and only one to two adult persons, not several this being that she will think play time!
Yes, other people in household will need to learn these new word or commands, agree upon which word or signal will be for come, to use throughout the day and night with the stricted reminder only one to two adults with her attention on you only works with her. you want two sessions a day One person for each session.(The second adult, maybe Hubby if you have one of those) can take the second training session
Remember to reward her for everytime she does come to you, treats I personally do not care for because what if you are not able to get to them? Praise and affection are always there.
(Note: Use a stern look and firm, even voice every time if using voice commands and that the dog's attention is on you not on a butterfly on you. Also do not GO FOR her, as mentioned before yes she thinks you are playing)
Also do not over work her on this, she will become tired (bored) with it.
Ten to fifteen sessions a day two times a day works best. I stress this,
1. One to two adults -no children- Only one adult per session no distraction work ten to fifeteen minutes two times a day.
2. Stick to the new command of COME. All member's in the house should use this command or singal for her to come, children need to be made aware that new sould is not a game with her.
3. Stern look and firm even voice.
4. Reward or praise this is an life long must.
5. Be consistant with this even after she learns to come to you everytime, slacking off does lead to them slacking too.

Best wishes

if you have other people in the house, it may be due to those people because they might be trying to train her or say that command and then switch the topic. IF not, you did that a bit and made it become a habbit for your dog. If you say certain commands then just quit on your dog and not finish what you said. To fix this, train her for about 3 days in a row, 20 minute sessions, teach her the stuff shes confused about or the commands she gets "over excited" wen said. act serious, and take control over your dog. if she makes the simplist understanding praise her alot for those 3 days and slowly decrease the praise. it might sound as if im telling you to teach your dog come even tho she knows that command, its just she needs to be taught that you mean buisness when it comes to that command.

Simple. Reward her with treats when she comes. She'll learn it pays to come to you.

Here's a site with tips on how to teach your puppy all of the basic commands (sit, stay, come) as well as a few cool tricks
