Just curious. When does one become considered a "collector?"

I think you have too many and are a collector if you have more than you can properly care for.

Being called a collector doesn't have much to do with how many dogs the person owns, its whether or not that person can take care of all of them, and give them all the right amount of care that each one needs. I have 9 dogs and I take care of all of them. If I have 20 dogs and took great care of all of them, I still wouldn't be considered as a collector.

When you cannot give each dog personal attention at least once every 2 days. It also depends on if you work or not. If you have a full time job and no one to spend time with them than 4 is the limit. If it is part time then maybe 6. and if you stay at home except for errands than 10 ish. Give or take... I think that 2 or 3 dogs are plenty though! If you can take care of more though then go ahead! There are plenty of dogs that need good homes!!

When one does not have enough time to give a lot of love and attention to each dog daily.

So it would depend on how much time and space you have, partly. I know people who have one dog but no time for it, and others who have 16 dogs, but they are home for most of the day and their dogs are their life.

When you don't have enough space for the dogs to run around and play, when you keep all the dogs locked up for longer than they are with people, and when you cannot adequately care for the dog's social, emotional, and training needs, that's when there are too many.

It also depends on the city laws, since you are limited by those as well. The people I know with lots of dogs have a TON of property and are outside city limits.

As long as you do not break any city or county laws regarding pet ownership, and as long as you have the space, the time, the money and the love to care for each dog properly then you can't have too many. You need to have the money to take the dogs to the vet whenever they need it. To feed a quality diet, to train them, socialize them, etc. And time to spend with them, loving them is as important as any of their other needs. We have more dogs than most. I am home 99% of the time and that time is devoted to the dogs. They go to the vet whenever they need to. My dogs are all very healthy and usually just have to see vet about once a year for checkups and shots. We have money put aside for emergencies. Our dogs do not have to do without anything. We also rescue several dogs a year and pay all vet expenses out of pocket for their vet care including spaying and neutering. Why do we do all of this? Because of our love for the animals.

We also have a big house and a yard that is plenty big enough for them to run around and play in, and hearts filled with love for all of them.

We have four dogs and two cats. As far as I'm concerned, thats the limit before you cross over into weird cat lady or dog hoarder category. If I had the space and money, I would run a full-on animal rescue and take as many animals in as possible. But here, we've maxed out at 4 and 2.

It really depends on where you live and what you can handle. If you live out in the country and have several acres and can handle having 15 dogs. Good for you. Most cities have a limit that you can have. In my area most are 3 to 4 dogs.

more than 2

For many 1 is too many and for me 8 is too many, since I had 7 and now have 6, due to 1 of my dogs going to the Bridge. I groom and train all my dogs, have them UTD and neutered and my neighbors tell me they prefer my several dogs plus incoming/outgoing fosters to my other neighbors with 1 untrained, filthy, outside barker. You have too many dogs when you can not clean up after them, properly groom, feed or care for them. All dogs need flea and heartworm preventative and if you can not afford basic care then you should not have any pets period. If your dogs are going without grooming and are matted up you have too many even if you have 1 Lhasa Apso.
