Many private healthcare professionals are refusing "new" patients, a lot of whom, yes, have government insurance.

The fact is that Medicare/Medicaid keep cost down by paying providers very little and making their lives miserable with endless paperwork.

So, welcome to universal healthcare where you may or may not get access to healthcare but you will certainly get a little plastic card.

Another reason they refuse Medicare / Medicaid paitents is the rate at which some of the patients in these groups "no show" for their appointments, it is especially bad with the Medicaid paitents.

There is a Childrens nephrology clinic that runs out of the hospital I work at. 2 days a week a specialist in chidlrens kidneys disorders comes to see paitents, so that the partents do not have to travel 60 miles to the Childrens Hospitall. Among the Medicaid paitent group, roughly 50% actaully show up for their appointment. This is despite phone and mail reminders. Not worth the doctors time after awhile. Really can't blame them for refusing to take the insurance.

If it's a private practice, they can refuse to take any form of coverage they choose. I worked at a doctor's office before, and we lost money many times over due to the way Medicare and some other insurances filed their claims. It would also take Medicare 4 x's longer to pay us than other companies.

You assume a lost for every medicare/medicade patient. It's not worth the hassle in some cases. It takes 4 months for medicade reimbursement in Illinois.
