Al Gore is just the messenger; it's the scientific community that is telling us how global warming is becoming a serious threat to our very existence. But, many people choose to "shoot the messenger" simply because they:
a) Don't like Gore's politics (which has nothing to do with global warming);
b) Don't want to face the facts that global warming is a serious threat because it would mean they'll have to sacrifice by driving more fuel-efficient vehicles;
c) Don't want to invest the time or intelligence in their own research; it's easier to listen to the naysayers.
Shallow ignorance shows up as arrogance, avarice and hubris sets in; many people don't want to face the truth because it means they will have to stop driving their Hummers and SUVs; they might have to start practicing the art of REusing, REducing and REcycling; or they might actually have to face the fact that we've been incredibly poor stewards of the Earth, over whom we were given dominion.
America, especially, is to blame for ignoring the threats posed by global warming. We represent 5% of the world's population, yet squander 55% of all global resources just so we can live in excessive comfort and enjoy a lifestyle of squalor, waste and callous disregard for the rest of the humans, plants and animals on the globe.
One day we will pay for our grievous excesses. -RKO- 11/11/07

I think he's unimportant to the science. He doesn't do any of it, what he says or does has nothing to do with it.
And the science proves global warming is real, and mostly caused by us.
This is science and what counts is the data.
"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”
Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)
Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut and the first Commander of the Naval Space Command
Here are two summaries of the mountain of peer reviewed data that convinced Admiral Truly and the vast majority of the scientific community, short and long.

"There's a better scientific consensus on this [climate change] than on any issue I know... Global warming is almost a no-brainer at this point. You really can't find intelligent, quantitative arguments to make it go away."
Dr. Jerry Mahlman, NOAA

it is not purely an issue of being a Christian. earlier Christians ever began, it become a command for people era. Adam & Eve have been charged at Genesis a million:28 to "become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and function in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and each living creature this is moving upon the earth.” So looking after the atmosphere and all creatures in that's component to the unique objective for humanity.

Al Gore is a shyster and nothing more. He has created near mass hysteria for the weak minded over a natural warming cycle that man can do nothing about.
He has been busy selling lots of "carbon offsets" to the weak minded as well, all while living in his huge home or tooling around the country in his personal carbon spewing jet....ahh well, do as he says, not as he does.

Well I think he IS important to science. He is the one that brought global warming to every ones attention. Scientist have been trying to warn everybody since the 70's. No one listened until he spoke up. I think he is generally concerned about our environment.

Of course he's right. Al Gore didn't invent these ideas. He's merely reporting the consensus of the world's scientists. I think he's a brilliant man, a devoted public servant and totally deserving of his Nobel Prize.

He's a star
He's smarter than Bush waging useless wars
China is starting to reduce emissions (a bit) because of his numerous talks
Let's hope he runs for president
