I've noticed my cat will walk around and when it sniffs the rug sometimes it's mouth opens just a little and stays that way for a few seconds. Anyone know why?

it's called flenge-ing(oops, spelled wrong, sorry!). cat's do it to better smell something they find interesting, especially other cat odors.some cat at one time must have marked(peed) the places you see your cat do this. or it's just a smell that he likes.LOL. try using an enzyme to clean these spots. there are several brands out there. it may take several cleaning to get rid of the odor your cat is smelling. good luck!

VeggieTa is right. Cats have another sensory organ at the very rear of the mouth, where the mouth and nose "channels" meet, and when they find an odor they want to explore further, they sniff with their nose and mouth, to pass the scent over that spot. It is called flehming, and male cats do it most notably when they are outside, non-neutered, and the breeze wafts the scent of a female in estrus their way. It has been suggested that they actually sort of "taste" the scent.

It's called a flehmen response. Cats have a patch of nerve endings on the roof of the mouth that helps them "taste" the smell.

Usually for my cats that means that they smelled something foul or something really strong.
