It was on verge of extinction due to the Muslim barabrians and Hinduism was saved by SIKHISM and SIKHISM only. Each and every Hindu today owes his hindu existence to the Sikh gurus who died defending Hinduism from the plague of Islam.

Yes, it was indeed on the verge of extincton. Everyone knows about the Great Adi Shankaracharya, but half of the people who have heard of Him do not know that he held debates with Buddhist scholars of those times and defeated them all. Also he Re-established Hinduism in India, his 4 Maths at 4 corners of India i.e at Badri/Kedar, in the north, Puri in the east, Dwaraka in the west, and Shringeri in the south are glaring examples for this. Also he established numerous Temples, in Kerala, Karnataka and uptil Kashmir.

It is nice feeling that Buddhism was driven away from the land of Buddha. There are no many Buddhists in India now (apart from the few Tibetian migrants and other fair weather converts)

It was Buddhism that made Indians weak. Only after Buddhism crept, Indians became weak, the invasions from the west, Alexander etc. was the result of this. Also the later invasions from the Muslims. When Europeans came, India had become so weak.... and the rest is History.

JESUS IS TO JEWS IS WHAT BUDDHA IS TO HINDUS.
Jesus was a Jew and tried to reform the Jewish faith
Buddha was a Hindu and tried to reform Hinduism.

Like Jews have no extinction, even Hindus do not have extinction, they will be on the decline, but will rise again.

But who has come to save the Hindus from Hinduism...

Sri Krsna Chaianya Maha Prabhu...

Nityananda Prabhu

Sri Adwaitacharya

Gadadhara Pandita

Sri Vasa Thakura

And all the Devotee's of Lord Gora Sundhara

they came 500 years ago and their movement is growing slowly and very carefully... but soon will be very very wide spread.

And most caste Hindu's don't like to see the movement grow...

Why...

Because it generates a religion that is based on love of God not just birth... and any one can be and or become a lover of God... no matter what race or birth.

Cool isn't it.

Some of the earlier teachers of Maha Prabhu's movement known as the " Brahma Madhava Gdiya Sarawatat Sampradaya "... in the early 1900's... were even persecuted heavily because of the path of devotion they were involved with spreading.

So ....

yes Shankara played a great role in saving Hinduism but there were many who came after Him.... all leading up to Maha Prabhu Sri Krsna Chaitanya.... and friends.

Madhavacharya.... Ramanujyacharya.... Visnu Swami ... and Nimbartiya.... are four major personalities that further developed the teachings of Shankara.

There is a line coming from the most high.... through one to another to another, reaching across this ocean of life... reaching out to us... to those who will hear the call... the Trump of God....

May those who have and ear listen.

You may be thinking of the invasion of the Islamic warriors into India around a milineum ago (I believe). It delt a severe blow to budhism because they destroyed the temples where Budhist monks lived and practiced. Hinduism, however, was more of a lay persons practice, so the destruction of temples was less significant as people continued to maintain alters and practice in their homes.

There is no Religion by the name Hinduism. Some West Asians out of their ignorance ,gave the name Hindu (which was copied by Westerners, without verification and added an appendage "ism" also)) to SANAATHANA DHARMAM. It was never on the verge of Extinction at any time in the History..After Mulim invasions, it became very strong.-Gori Mohammed was defeated by sri.Prithiviraj Chauhan Sixteen(16) times.Akbar invited Hindu cheiftains for a compromise formula,(Birbal became Akbar's prime adviser, which Akbar's own brother-in-law did not get.) which Aurangaseeb refused and Mogul Kingdom lost all its territoies and the last Mogul Emperor(?)-just within his palace in red fort- was arrested and hanged by the British-East India Company. From 300 B.C.E to 200 A.D Bhuddism had more numerically large followers in the Indian Sub-Continent than Sanathana Dharmam, due to State patronage by Samraat(Emperor) sri.Asoka, sri,Harshavardhana in the North and sri.Mahendra Varma Pallava in the South and Bhuddhism was spread in Tibet,China,Ceylon,Burma, Mangolia,Japan.--Acharya(very Great Teacher) sri.Sankara within his Life-Span of 32 years toured by walk (Bhagavad Paadha) from Kashmir to Kerala-North >> South(3000 miles length),from Gujarat to Assam-West >>East (3000 miles breadth) and met each and every Bhuddhist Religious Leader ,argued with them(Tharkam) and made them realise that their Religious Philosophy is in-correct and converted each and every one of them with their large number of followers to Sanaathana Dharmam. One important Bhuddhist Monk(leader) who became sri.Sankara's one of the 4 Primary disciples was made the Head of Seat of Religious Advice(Peetaathipathi) out of 4 Peetams, sri Sankara created for North,South,East and West parts of Indian Sub-continent.

It is the History which revived them. They had no name for their religion. The Persians/Moguls/Afghans gave the name 'Hindu' and the people accepted this for good. 'Hindu' is a Persian word, not a Sanskrit word.
