I wear thongs.
lol. If you have been endowed, then temple garments.
They are kind of like an undershirt and shorts for guys. Same for women, but a bit different.
But even then, I'll still probably wear a thong. (not.)

LDS people wear something they call the garment after they have gone through the temple ceremony. It is something very sacred to them. The garment serves as a reminder of the covenants they have made to the Lord in His Holy House.
From the LDS Church's official website:
"Wearing the Temple Garment:
Once people are endowed, they have the blessing of wearing the temple garment throughout their lives. The garment provides a constant reminder of the covenants made in the temple."
The garment also encourages modesty and a reminder to live a moral and clean life, something that LDS people are known for. LDS people are instructed when they attend the temple for the first time that the garmet is to be worn at all times, except for obvious exceptions such as bathing and intamacy between husband and wife. Additional undergarments that may need to be worn (i.e. such as a bra for women) are to be worn over the garmet.
If you have any further questions about wearing the garment, or the LDS temple, I would ask a member who has been to the temple, an LDS missionary, or an LDS Bishop. You also may find any other questions you may have at www.lds.org. There is a search feature where you can type in any question that you may have in order to find the answer.

Sacred and secret are two separate words with two different meanings. LDS members who have entered a holy temple receive sacred undergarments that act as a reminder to avoid temptation and honor sacred covenants made in the temple.
That is what they are.
Other denominations, other religions have similar clothing do represent the same thing.

Lisa, in a comparitive note, the armed forces have a term called "need to know" when it relates to classified information.
The same follows for the temple garments worn by temple-worthy Latter-day Saints. Although it isn't classified to any degree of security, it is regarded as sacred to those wearing such garments.
Contact your local missionaries. They will teach you the prerequisite lessons so you can be baptized by proper authority and join the LDS Church. In about a year, if you are found worthy by the bishop and stake president, you can go to a temple of the Lord and learn for yourself.

Why is it ok to ask mormons about their underwear, but creepy if you ask anyone else about their underwear?
Is this an underwear fetish question? Or just another attempt to bash what another group considers sacred?
LOL for something people claim is suppose to be a secret, a lot of people sure do know about it.
Does anyone esle find it ironic when people ask a general question about this socalled secret practice.
Sacred means it is a subject not to be made fun of or taken lightly. Secret means it is a subject not to be talked about, ever. Mormons dont have any secrets. We do have many things that are sacred. After seeing how much disrespect and how our beliefs are practically spit upon by many in here, do you really wonder why mormons dont want to discuss things that are sacred on here?

I wear garments, but I wear them over my regular underwear. There is nothing to say that you have to wear them next to the skin, just under the outer clothing, so you can carry on wearing your thongs if you prefer (yuk!) but I know many people don't see the point of adding an extra layer, especially men for whom they're just like boxers and a tee-shirt.
Garments are not magical in any way. They serve to ensure modesty and to remind us each day of the covenants we have made in the Temple.
I love wearing them. They're very warm (I live in Britain, it's freezing here right now!) and comfortable, cheaper than regular underwear to buy, and available in some lovely fabrics. The Drisilque is great for summer as it's very light and feels like satin. The Carinessa is 9% lycra and feels gorgeous on.
It's true enough to say they're not sexy, but they're not meant to be. And to be honest, I find them sexy because I wouldn't have married my husband if he hadn't been wearing them... they remind me that we are sealed for eternity, and that's wonderful to think about. And they come off...
