You can get some treatment from a vet; Frontline, Advantage, Revolution or Advocate. These all work and are safe. Do not use anything from a pet store. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work.
You will probably have to spray your house as well, since this is where most of the fleas are living. Again, get something from a vets, not a pet store.
Don't use Dawn or any flea shampoos, garlic, salt or Borax or whatever else people on here are going to suggest.

These days handling fleas is very simple!! Just buy Advantage or Frontline! You DO have to keep applying it regularly! You cannot be hit and miss with the treatment.
If your cat in an indoors cat at all times, then after about 6 months you will not have fleas again, BUT if your cats is an indoor-outdoor cat you will always be having a problem because the cat is bringing the fleas into your home each time it goes outside.
Another PLUS for keeping your cat indoors at all times!!

The best products are Advantix for fleas and ticks and mosquitos, though cannot be used on cats and isn't recommend on pets with cats in the household, advantage for fleas, both for dogs and cats, then theres frontline for flea and ticks for dogs and cats. At the clinic i work at we have seen better results with frontline but some pet do seem to do better with one than the other. Both advantix and advantage come in four months supply making it alittle more expensive that frontlie which comes in three months supply. Both are very good and safe products. Just be sure not to bath your pet 2-3 days before and after applying it so it has a chance to spread thoughly over the whole body.

You can add some garlic to your pets diet. Fleas don't like the smell or the taste of garlic. It's a natural deterrent for fleas and good for dogs and cats.
