I think you should use good shoes with cushioning for training. And lightweight racing shoes for racing. That way you protect your feet in training and go faster in racing.

for my first few meets I ran in the same shoes for training and for racing. I wouldn't advise using old shoes for training because they wont support your feet well enough which will cause pain in your legs. If you aren't going to buy a pair of spikes, I would say use new for both. It is important to get new shoes every season to support your feet and legs well enough to be healthy. Light shoes are the best for running so I would say if you are a serious competitor, go out and buy a really light pair of shoes or a pair of spikes.

If your new to xc then sure. I used to just wear my trainers for meets. After you do it for a while and start to get good then you will want to go out and buy a pair a racers.

You train in trainers (11oz -12oz) which protect your feet and racing flats with practically no support (7oz-4oz) to race
