Golden Retrievers are very food orientated and would eat all day if allowed to. They are such appealing dogs that it is very easy to keep giving them more when they look at you with those big brown eyes but you have to be really hard and don't give in or you will have an obese dog on your hands and his joints and heart will be affected if he becomes too fat.
Start now by cutting his food down by one third and don't be tempted to give him a couple of exta scoops. He really doesn't need it. Try bulking his food out with a handful of veggies. Dogs love raw carrots and raw cabbage. This will make him feel fuller at meal times.
Don't try exercising him - keep at it. He needs exercise, two good walks of at least 20 minutes per day, running off lead if possible. This will help to reduce his weight. If you can't always walk him throw a ball for him and let him run for it.
If you want your dog to have a long and healthy life please watch his diet. You don't say how old he is but the adult weight for a Golden dog should be no more than 34 kilos.
You could try buying the light variety food. This might help.
Good luck with him.

Just because your dog is begging for more food doesn't mean he's hungry. You should set the boundaries on how much your dog gets to eat each meal. This should be based on his weight and age, I would recommend consulting a vet to make sure your dog gets the right amount of food to eat. Whichever dog food you are feeding should list feeding amounts somewhere on the bag, this is a good starting point if you don't want to go to the vet, but I would recommend the vet's word over that of the food bag.
Golden Retrievers are high energy dogs, I used to have 3 of them. Make sure your dog gets at least two good walks a day, at least 30 minutes but I'm sure your dog would love a long walk with you. This could be around the neighborhood or through a park. Also make sure your dog gets plenty of play time like fetch, retrievers love to fetch. Be careful with treats, too many treats can be leading to your dogs weight problem also.

Don't give him the extra food. You control the food not him. If he's getting fat, cut back on his food and increase his exercise, and don't give into those puppy eyes begging you for more food, its for his best interest.

- 0besity can lead to joint damage & many other things such as circulatory problems or diabetes
- you should buy a new type of dog food i know that pedigree carries a line of dogfood for overweight dogs you can try that.
heres the picture of the bags.
http://www.pedigree.com/assets/images/common/products/bagsWeightLossLarge.jpg
- If you don't want to buy new dog food then skip out on the last 2 skoops. & slowly lessin the amount of skoops. And encourage the dog to drink water the more full the stomach is filled with water the less food the dog can consume , so the dog will get fuller faster but with less food.
- If he doesn't want excersise then don't think of it as excersise play a nice fetch game with him run with him wrestle with him that will get him caught up in the moment & viola itz playful excercise

You need to feed him less. my dog used to eat 2 cups..and she was getting fat. then we gave her 1.5 cups and she was losing weight. and we asked the vets.and thats what they suggested. maybe try a less fattening food. or maybe even give it helathier, more natural treats instead of fattening ones.

I had to put one of my dogs on a diet last year. He was miserable and though he was starving to death the first week,
Now he looks awsome and is healthier now too. Think twice with those extra scoops cuz you are really hurting your dog by overfeeding him.

First off, what type (brand) of food are you feeding him? If he is obese, he should go on Prescription Diet R/D. You can get this at a Veterinary. If you are feeding him a no-name cheap brand of dog food, he will need to eat more because of the quality of food. Now a Nutro or Science Diet should fill them up more. Both brands have reduce calorie food. If he's a puppy, he will of course be getting bigger.
