I bought 2 winter white female hamsters a year ago and they got on fine for 2 weeks then started fighting, so I seperated them. The thing is they had a lovely big cage when they were together but now they have to live in separate small mouse cages. Is it possible to reintroduce them? PS one is quite aggressive and a bit manic and the other one is quiet and placid.

No as they have already had problems you need to keep them separate. If you do the aggressive one will kill the other.

I don't know what the physical layout of the big cage is so I am guessing that this might work. Can you get a sheet of plastic and slide it into the cage to make two separate-half-of-the-big- cage areas? That way they can see each other and share an area but not hurt each other.

If there is no reason to think they are more compatible it is not worth putting them together in one cage where the aggressive one can bother the placid one.

If your hamsters are the same sex, they will fight. If they are opposite sexes, they will breed when the female is ready. The way to tell when the female is ready, if you touch her, she will stand perfectly still. If you want to breed, this is the time to introduce the male to her but remove him after the breeding is done as they will fight again. Hamsters do not do well together after they reach a certain age.
