I've taught classical guitar for many years and to me the best way to learn is to have a teacher...but I know that today a lot of students cannot afford them, so the next best thing is to get an online tutor, they also have lots of DVD's, Cd's, videos, and books on the market today...they also have free lessons on the Internet, but I prefer the others, at the end I'll give you some free sites and you be the judge as to why !!!!!!!!

You have to be very dedicated to the guitar if you want to learn it. It is very difficult and frustrating at the beginning and most begginers quit right away.
If you are serious, go out and buy a cheap acoustic guitar. Then name your guitar (I always do this for some superstitious reason) lol
It wouldn't be a bad idea to pick a couple of lessons up from someone who knows what they're doing. I never did though, but thats your choice.
When I got my first guitar, the first thing I learned how to do was play simple songs through tabs. Tabs are VERRRY easy to learn to read. Heres a link to a good tutorial. http://guitar.about.com/library/blhowtor...
Once you learn a couple songs maybe like jingle bells or smoke on the water, move onto chords.
There are many online videos that teach the guitar on youtube so I recommend checking that out. Of course these aren't nearly as good as having a teacher in person.
Good luck and stick with it! Guitar is a very fun instrument, but it takes time and practice.

First see if anyone you know wants to start a band. Second, learn the basics. You can't become a guitar god overnight. and if your looking for lessons check out ultimate-guitar.com
some of the lessons there helped a lot when i started

Good starting point is taking lessons from a good teacher and practicing a lot. Think of it this way, if you're going to write childrens books, you have to learn how to write first. You would learn to write basically any kind of book. Then you would focus the talent you've so developed on children's books. In other words, you can't just focus on metal, you have to learn to play, then direct what you know to developing a good metal sound. Good luck.

Go to your local music store and ask around for someone to give you guitar lessons. It helps a lot when somone is there instead of just going online.

Congrats on that dream. But to get good guitar lessons find a guy who listens to metal music as well.

No! not on line! The best way is to start from a scratch and learn to read notes before anything else! And take private lessons, from a friend or a tutorial or something =)
