I'm looking for the name/type of ammunition that shatters inside of you, and who invented it , and some examples of what it could be used for. And is there a particular website I can go to for research on different bullets? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

You are talking about "Frangable" ammunition. The technical name is AET =(Advanced Energy Transfer) ammunition. The concept was to design a bullet that would fragment on contact with any surface, yet would provide "Maximum "stopping power and fragmentation inside an assailant at close ranges or in confined area's.Since it would disintegrate upon contact with any hard surface, this resulted in a bullet with major stopping power, yet wouldn't hurt or endanger an innocent bystander with a pass thru shot or bullet fragments The technology was first introduced commercially by a company that designed and manufactured the Glaser Safety Slug in 1974. This was a
major advance in ammunition technology and was almost immediately adopted by the U.S. Sky Marshal's for use in Anti-Hi jacking or Anti-terrorist tactics on airplanes with pressurized cabins. It was also utilized on ships and in Nuclear Power Plants to avoid any possibility of ricochet or destruction of fragile equipment

These below listed websites can give you additional information of even more technology that has been developed since the Glaser Safety Slug was developed. It is now manufactured in handgun calibers and rifle calibers..

They are called frangible bullets. One of the manufacturers is Glazer ammunition. The purpose is not so much to break apart inside the target but rather to break apart if you miss your target and hit a hard surface. In such a case, the bullet breaks apart rather than riccocheting. In the event that you do hit your intended target, the bullet will break apart rather than over penetrating and hitting an innocent bystander.

For info on different bullets, you can look up the websites for Hornady bullets, Sierra bullets or Remington bullets. For info on frangible bullets, try searching for Glazer bullets.

JD has the best information about this round however, the ability of frangible ammunition to do what is required is debatable because of the lack of penetration of this round. Heavy clothing greatly reducedes it's effectiveness.

One type is called Dum-dum bullets, they are designed to come apart on impact to maximise damage to tissue. They were originally made by the British Army at a factory in India, at a place called Dum-dum. You can do it yourself by cutting a cross into the tip of a solid round. They're not very good for hunting because they destroy too much meat, they were designed to kill humans.
