being dependent and others, and being incapable of doing things for yourself

First thing is the horror of becoming dependant on others.Second is loss of capacity to enjoy sex.But if you think rightly,it is not physical age that is important, but the mental age.You can prevent the mind fro ageing. If you feel mentally 'OLD' ,you are doomed even at the callendar age of 20.The secret of happy and long life is keeping mentally young. You will be surprised if you travel through Himalayas,Tibet, when you see even very aged people walk and enjoy life as younger people live.Men aged 70 to 80 are still enjoying life.

My wife is a cardiogprapher, and sometimes she comes home upset because she has discovered a bedridden patient in distress because none of the ward staff can be bothered to help them get a drink or another blanket. Most people praise without hesitation our nursing staff and this is without doubt very deserved, but in my wife's experience there are some who think that basic patient care is below them, as they are now clinical experts.

My fear is being that person, alone, cold, thirsty or hungry and uncared about. That's what frightens me most about growing old.

Listen to the words of Pink Floyd's song "Time", they are so true.

What MarkEver... says is true. God forbidden one needs care in the hospital or nursing homes.
As I am told by many people I know, having their parents in nursing homes, there are few nurses caring about elderly's thirst. They don't even think they could find themselves in the same condition some day.
The same situation applies in hospitals. You don't have to wait until you get old.
So, I have to admit that the worst thing is loosing your ability to walk, and loosing your brain.

It happened to me yesterday. I had to be fitted at the hospital with a digital hearing aid because I am so deaf. A watershed moment and seems to say that old age is beckoning. I am 55 years old.

Its losing my independence that bothers me the most. To have someone tell me what to do and when appals me. Old age is worse than death.

Becoming dependent. I've always been a do-it-myselfer. My pride would suffer from even needing to ask for help.
