I have the exact problem. I'm 22, and a nursing student and am always struggling to keep afloat because I wake up and NEED MORE SLEEP. It's very rare I feel refreshed. But even though I work in the medical field, I am still trying to find the answer - I was put on antidepressants too. It's too much of an easy fix and I would be careful about the medications. Doctors cannot always be trusted - if they're having a bad day they will throw you on anything, as long as it's vaguely justifiable, so you go away and they can go home.

Anyway, antidepressants tired me out and I would talk in my sleep and wake myself up, and have bizarre dreams like being stuck in a maze. I didn't quite start screaming, but I didnt even think they helped depression - if anything they made it worse!!!

I think try getting off medication because it's not going to take your tiredness away and in my case it didn't cure depression.

If you've been on several medications and none of them have worked, you should consult with a psychiatrist if you think you need anti-depressants. Some anti-depressants make people feel more tired; they have different effects on different people.

Your doctor [a generalist, I assume] may not have a lot of experience with depression that doesn't readily respond to whatever medications he/she is familiar with. It can take some time to find the right medicine for a particular patient; that's why a psychiatrist would be a good option at this point. He/she would have more experience with the different medications.

If you do this, take a list of the medications you have already tried and the effect [good and bad] they have had. This will be very helpful in figuring out what to do next.

There may also be some physical reason for your fatigue. If your doctor doesn't want to explore this with you, maybe you should change doctors.

Have you ever been tested for anemia? It's a simple blood test. I have been anemic for years and I have had the same symptoms. When it was at it's peak I could not function during the day. I was so tired and sleepy that I couldn't concentrate or anything. Get your doctor to test you, what have you got to lose? I have to take vitamin supplements everyday and when I forget I can tell the difference! Oh by the way, you also get depressed because you're so darn tired all the time and don't want to do anything. Get it checked.

Finding the right anti-depressant is like trial and error. Lots of anti-depressants cause sleepiness, but for me Cymbalta did just the opposite. You might want to try it, I'm completely in love with this drug. I feel a MILLION times better, and it started working within an hour of taking the very first pill!

Roxy,
I'm not a doctor, and I don't know your doctor, but I can tell you one thing: you deserve better.
Try another doctor, maybe a specialist (a psychiatrist. perhaps).
You are too young to feel like this.
A doctor should probably rule out that somethng is physically wrong with you, by doing a seria of tests.
I hope you feel better.

have your thyroid checked with a simple blood test. You may be hypothyroid- and synthroid could help.
