Where in the Bible does it say the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for today? I can't seem to find it. All I see is that the Holy Spirit will abide with us forever. So why do people try and claim the gifts have ceased?
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

So far I am agreeing with everyone here. When Jesus returns they will cease but I don't believe they will before.

Just a bit of a side note I wonder how people explain that knowledge hasn't stopped? It says it will cease when that which is perfect comes. It that which is perfect came and stopped tongues shouldn't it have stopped knowledge?

The gifts haven't ceased!! I sure do wish people would cease from saying they've ceased!!
Most people say that because they haven't experienced them directly so they tend to believe some stuffy old seminary professors who hadn't experienced the gifts either and came up with such notions.

The closest thing to it is in 1 Corinthians 13:8 where it says tongues and prophecy will cease. Some people say (without much justification in my opinion) that they have already ceased, either with the closing of the canon or with the death of the apostles.
The reason some say the death of the apostles is because they believe gifts could only be passed on by the laying on of hands, and the apostles were the only people with that authority after Jesus left.
From the context of 1 Corinthians 13, I get the distinct impression that tongues and prophecy will cease at the second coming of Christ, which hasn't happened yet.

Pastor Billy says: excellent question Edge brillant so glad you've finally decided to talk on a topic we can all share in.
Your question begs asking if all gifts have ceased then how can anyone understand the scriptures? Would this mean the gift of wisdom and knowledge has also ceased?
I will pose an answer for you, those who deny the gifts also deny rightful authority. I've experienced the denial of gifts with those coming from the Baptist and nondemo traditions.

My early training in the Faith was in a Conservative Baptist church.. There they taught that at the close of the Apostolic Era, the scripture were complete and the charismatic gifts such as tongues and prophecy were taken away. They quote:
1 Corinthians 13:8-10
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
Since that time I see the Perfect to be Christ not a close completed scripture.. I am gifted in prophecy as the Spirit directs I lead a small nondenominational devotional. I don't believe I can tell God the Holy Spirit what He can do and what He can't. I am merely his creation He is GOD... IHS Jim

Good point and it doesn't say that they will cease..
I have seen this verse below taken to mean perfect is the perfect Word of God and they say because we have the Bible we don't need miracles.. I take perfect to mean Jesus.. After Jesus is personally and physically on earth then we won't need the gifts..
1Cor 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

The gifts and calling of God is without repentance !
The gifts will be around , just like the prophets, until the Holy Spirit is taken away...
We wont need them in the New Jerusalem ! Halleluiah !!!

some say 1 corinthians 13:8-10....but I can't agree with that....I believe we still see through a glass darkly and that that "which is perfect" has not yet arrived......
edit: to Vot A. Do you believe that God's two witnesses of Revelation 11 will be false prophets?/ if prophecy has ceased, then they will be, right?
btw; the Bible clearly says that apostles, prophets, teachers, evangelists and pastors are permanent offices in the Church as long as the Church exists....[ephesians 4:11-13]

This sounds to me like a reference to "have no thoughts for the morrow," and the idea that heaven is life with Jesus Christ and not here on Earth. I see that the gift of life keeps on coming.
