No one really knows. In fact, I would think there's a good chance that it doesn't exist on Earth anymore. An apple is just a convienient representation.

There are two trees mentioned in the Holy Bible: the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Eve was tempted by Satan in the form of snake and she ate the fruit and afterwards offered it to Adam. That's why after eating the fruit, they realized they were naked. It's not an apple really. Some people made their own interpretations and missed out on this simple truth.

In the Bible, it mentions that it's a fruit. My pastor said that it could be anything...an apple, a banana, an orange, or even a pomegranate.
The idea of it being an apple could've come from all those Medieval and Baroque paintings of the Garden of Eden (usually Adam and Eve are shown holding an apple).

The fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is unique. Man made up the apple thing. But the fruit had unique qualities, in that it caused a mortal state to come over their immortal, spiritual, innocent bodies- bodies that could live forever in that state, unable to understand or have children, and not progressing.
There is one other fruit there that is unique. That is the tree of life. Its fruit has the ability to give us immortality. They had to be prevented from eating of that tree after they fell, or they would live forever in their sins and not have a chance to repent.
Fruit! It isn't just for Eden any more...

The apple was not mentioned. God said "you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge" Don' t get hung up on the words. The meaning is the important part.

The forbidden fruit of tree of knowledge is not a fruit at all.
Actually, the fruit is a symbol for a question. Adam and Eve asked a forbidden question and God punished them and every generation forthcoming. Nice eh?

It only says it was a fruit.
Apples just happen to be the most common reference to fruit in mythology.

They don't know if it was an apple or not; the Bible doesn't say. It is just commonly depicted in American culture (and perhaps worldwide) as an apple in artwork.
