Due to the fact that this will be your first hamster, I recommened getting a Syrian, they are the biggest of the breeds and easiest to handle.
They live for 2 1/2 - 3 years on average.
I've heard that males are the best for first time hamster owners as they are more placid but I have allways had females with no problem. I guess the best thing to do would be to just have a look when you get there.
I wish you luck with your new hammy.

The correct english term is what. I am also 13 but people are just going to criticize you if you put that. Don't get a very small hamster, If your sister secretly gets it out she might lose it and it could get lost easily. What about a Mink hamster? They have long fur, around the midriff it looks like a skirt lol.
Carol has a point, Rats are much cleaner, friendlier if handled in the right way and looked after well. They can be trained to come when caled. My rat Scabbers used to run under my bed then come back when i called him. It was soo sweet. Sadly he died May 1st this year. Got back from holiday and his eye was puffed up twice its size. The vet had to put him down as he was in soo much pain.. >.< 3

Well a Russian Dwarf Hamster can flatten its spine and get out out a cage with bars wider than a small little finger.
But a Syrian Hamster who is bigger (and apparenlty lives to about 2 but ours is 3 and still really healthy!) and can't get out!

well i wouldnt get a hamster. I would save my money and get a gerbil cause hamsters are way to smelly and die fast, when i got a gerbil it lasted about 4 in a half years! and my sister got a hamster and it lasted only 2 in a half years i suggest you should get a gerbil if you get a hamster do not get a dwarf hampster get a teddy bear hampster okay so now what size cage? mine is 40cm x 20 x 35cm so i wouldnt get a very small cage. Big or small hampster? i would say Big my lil sis got a dwarf hampster it got lost in less than a year! so get a big one so it doesnt get lost so now it can have a large cage all this stuff plus food and cotton for cage and wood, and snacks, hampster, hampster ball, and cage all put together should cost around $150 dollars estimated. hope your hampster is nice and doesnt bite!

You should research some types of hamster online, then write some down that you are interested in. After, get your family and show them what you would like. Then go to the petstore. You could always ask the staff there any questions. Have fun!!

I would get a Campbell's dwarf, and buy an aquarium for it. They can't easily get out of an aquarium, and they're heavy enough for a little sister to not mess with. I have a great little Campbell's dwarf and she's the best hamster I've ever had. Very sociable and gentle, except that she likes to chew on my boyfriend's earlobes.

Get a stuffed one. Much easier to take care of. lol
Actually if you were around the SE or even the Columbus Ohio area, I could give you a couple of hampsters cage and all that my friend wants to give away. lol As to the gal that replied that they aren't worth the money since they die, I'd like to say for a fact that they live on to produce many families so that money lasts a long time. lol

I would get a syrian hamster they rock on (right now i am trying to get my parents to let me get one) and i think a good cage would be one with out tubes because hamsters will go in them and when you want to play with them you cant get them out with out takeing the whole thing a part but if you dont make sure you get a igloo for it to sleep in cause they will sleep in the tubes so you need a replacement

Chinese Dwarf Hamsters are really calm do not bite really small easy to take care of. You feed them every day, change water every other day and clean bedding every other week. The only type not to get is a Robo they bite and draw blood, ask your pet store employee for more tips

A small light brown male--thats what we had at school (30 years ago), and he was a delight--two are great if you have the room, as they can have company, but make sure they're the same sex otherwise you may end up with a hamster farm!
