The rest of the family must want one too, Jacks do lose loads of hair unless you get a wire coat. Not for the faint hearted when pups - be careful what you wish for.

Dogs do NOT make good Christmas presents, and you should do a TON of research BEFORE you get a dog. Do you know how much exercise Jack Russell Terriers require? They are very high energy, and if they don't burn their energy in a positive way, they may just find other things to do such as chew on your favorite pair of shoes. Jack Russells do shed. Being terriers, they have the urge to chase and should never be let off leash in an unfenced area. Dogs are a lifetime commitment and is NOT something you get on a whim. Are you prepared to dedicate your time and effort to it for its entire life?
The best way to convince your parents to get you one is to do your research on the breed, do well in school, and do all your chores. Show them you're responsible. You could even put together a little presentation on Jack Russells to show them they would be good for your family and show them how you plan on taking care of the dog if they get you one. Nagging and bugging them 24/7 is NOT the way to get a dog. It just shows immaturity. If they say no, leave it at that. They know what's best and may think you're not ready for a dog at the time. Trust me. From personal experience, I know. I wanted a dog when I was younger and would always ask my parents for a puppy. They would always say no because they knew how much work it was to raise a puppy. Now that I'm older, they're allowing me more freedom, but that involves more responsibility. I can keep up with school, chores, etc. and I may just be getting a dog soon. I've done my research and frequently visit dog forums to learn more about caring for dogs. It has worked very well for me, and sometimes it just takes time.

First i would do some more resaearch on the breed. Jack russels are wonderful dogs but well can be terrors and a pain in the neck. They are very very hyper. Can be destructive to your house. If you are gone alot and go on alot of trips this dog is not the one for you. They need alot of time. They also need to be walked atleast once a day and played with for more than 2 hours a day. They also need a big yard. THEY WILL NOT BE GOOD IN A APARTMENT! Also unless you get the wired hair they do shed ALOT! I would say maybe think about a diffrent breed. And if you really really want one here are some tips to drop some hints for your parents-
*Do your resaearch on the breed. Read books. Search the web. Know everything possible about the breed. You parents will see how much you truly want that kind of dog.
*Maybe start helping or walking neighbors dogs it helps neighbors and gets you ready and your parents will see how responsible you are.
*Keep your grades up
*don't bug them 24/7 about it give them hints here & there.
*And be respectful and responsible and kind.
Again I do not think JRTs are the breed for you. I am not trying to be rude i just want you & your new dog to be happy! Maybe try a diffrent breed.
Wishing you luck

Ok, I volunteer for an animal shelter and we really disapprove of people who get dogs for christmas presents. That being said, you sound like you want a dog for the right reason. You need to make sure that you can take care of it, and that you have enough money to buy it everything it needs. When I was trying to get my cat here is what I did : I wrote a letter to my parents explaining why I wanted a cat, that I would be responsible, etc.; I printed off alot of stuff about the breed, care, vets, grooming, and stuff like that and put it in a binder and made a "cat care book"; and I wrote out a schedule of my day including when I would feed, water, clean the litter box, and play with my new pet. Then I left all three things in my parents room before I went to bed. You could also go to www.petfinder.com and search jack russel terriers to find some in your area, and include print offs of those specific dogs, and their adoption prices with the other things. Oh, and I made a list of all the supplies I would need, and the cost of each thing.

dogs dont make good Christmas gifts. There's too much hustle and bustle.. visiting family and friends, deocrations, cooking, gifts, parties, etc.. its a confusing and stressful time, and its not a good environment to bring a new dog to the home. They are already confused and stressed about a new home. The best time to get a dog is AFTER the holidays, when everything is calmed down again.
Do well in school, keep your room clean, do your chores without asking, help around the house without asking. Do some more research, because JRTs DO shed! If you show your parents that you've been doing research on dogs, and you're proving to be responsible, they may consider a dog after the holidays.
By the way, telling your parents that you want to wait till after the holidays for a new pet shows Maturity AND responsability on your part too.

A puppy for x mas is not a good idea unless it is gotten before or after. A jack is a hyper breed, they do shed. and need lots of training. avoid pet shops as these puppies are from puppy mills, try to adopt. petfinder.com, or look for a good breeder.
now as of your parents, there is not much that can be said or done if they don't want another dog they don't. and if you don't do the last 2 things you said well yeah it shows your responsible..and should be done whether you want something or not.

Assuming you took good care of your previous dog your parents should be open to the idea of getting another one. If you didn't then it may be harder to convince them...tell them you are 4 years older now and will be more responsible this time. Jack Russells are a little hyper though....they are cute and small, but research breeds before you decide.

If you have any other pets, Look after it properly for the next week to prove to them. Jack russels are terriers and yap, Only some of them dont shed. Don't keep pleading them and DON'T have a temper tantrum. This will make you look like you are not old enough for one. Keep telling them facts about the dog, read up lots on it etc etc and look for some that are for sale around your area and tell them about them. :D Good luck

FIRST OFF.........dont convince. i tell people this over and over and it never works. if you try to convince your parents they just get annoyed. this is what i did:
i really wanted a chihuahua so i started to do extra chores. i took on more responsability than a kid ever needed to. so one day after about 2-4 weeks i sat my mom down when she was in a great mood. i told her im ready to take on a resonsability of a dog. she agreed and to this day i still dont have my chihuahua. i am on the waiting list and i will get my puppy in spring. im so excited. make sure first off your parents want another dog. then do extra chores and maybe get a job and make some money to help pay for puppy stuff. good luck!

its not sbout your behaviour..its about whether or not, as it would be YOUR pet, YOU are willing to make a commitment.
taking the dog for walks, feeding, playing, taking it to the vets etc.
also, dogs can't really be left alone for long periods of time, like if you are at school at your mom and dad work, its not ideal. they need companionship and lots of excercise.
I wonder whether, after a few weeks, the novelty of having a new pet will wear off, and you'll get bored with it ??
But, if you think you can do all this, all you need to do is persuade your parents.
Oh, and you didn't spell companion wrong...
