they sell little tick removers at pet stores and stores like walmart. If you can't get to one you can use 1 of 3 meathods

1)use a fork slip the base of the tick between two prongs- gently twist causing the tick to back out(works like the tick removers)

2)hold a match near the end of the tick and it will back out- there are two downsides- you can scare the dog or kill the tick and they you have to use tweezers to get it out and might accidentally leave the head in and it could get infected

3) apply a small amount of vasoline- the tick won't be able to breathe and should back out-

if none of these works then use the tweezer- and don't apply vasoline and then use the match- you don't want to turn your dog into a torch!!

also go online to see if it a deer tick- if it is save the tick and bring it and your dog to the vet

You could take it to the vet & get it some antibiotics just to make sure it's ok - BUT - you will be probably be spending a lot of money that you don't need to. Personally, I would just watch the site where the tick was, and monitor the dog's behavior over the next week. If the wound doesn't look infected & the dog is behaving normally, it's fine. If your dog gets a tick again, grasp it firmly with a tweezers as near to the head as possible and pull. This will normally pull it out with the head on. If you look closely, you will even see a bit of the dog's flesh at the mouth of the tick. (GROSS - I know!) I have pulled a LOT of ticks off of dogs - and I mean a LOT. I used to work as a groomer when I was younger and in college. You may also want to use Bio-Spot on your dogs. In my opinion, this is the best protection from ticks. It's a once a month topical treatment & it is very safe to use. I have Collies, which can be sensitive to certain drugs, and I've never had a problem with it & my dogs never have ticks. Eiyuu Ookami - The tick's head will NOT live after it's body has been pulled off! OMG - where did you get this info??? LOL!!

It can be unsafe to remove the tick yourself incase you were to leave the head in it could cause infection. If you have a flea and tick spray at home use that to kill the tick then once it has died you can safly remove it. If not then get some rubbing alcohol and pour some directly on the tick, the fumes with cause it to back out then take either a paper towl or tweezers and remove it. If you remove it yourself just make sure that you keep and eye on the area for a few days and let your vet know if it begins to swell or look infected.

Hi Jolie,
Wow this is really tricky as you have to make sure and remove the whole tick as it is burrowed down in your babies skin
OK what you want to do is get a pair of tweezers and Please have someone there to steady the pup and I really hope you are not squeamish You need to take the tweezers and go down to the skin of the pup as close as you can and Grab the head of the tick and pull it out quickly and Please make sure you have the whole thing as it is not a good thing to leave any of it in there as It can survive
Your Best bet is to go to the vet and have it removed but I have done this for a few of my friends who have found ticks on there Pups and it is simple just be fast about it don't dawdle and look just go in pull it and be done
Then take some Peroxide or Alchol and with a Q-tip or Cotton ball clean it out very very good and then you are going to wan to put something like Iodine or Betodine On it and do this every few hours to insure it remains clean and it is killing off all Bacteria
OH and I have a Book called the Veterinarians Desk Reference same as ht Physicians Desk Reference just for Pets and It is Great I have had it well over 15 years and It has saved me many many times
Good Luck to you and Please Keep us updated
Sincerely
Anne

The best way to take a tick off is to either to light a cigarette or a match and put it up to the tick. You have to be fast so when the tick jumps off you take a paper towel and grab it. Do not put the match or cigarette too close to burn the dog but close enough so that the tick jumps off. You should not use tweesers because you could leave the head still on the dog and it will regrow. To get rid of the tick, you have to wrap the paper towel around the tick and go outside and burn the paper towel. You know that the tick will die by heard a pop. (Thats the tick popping and dieing!!) Do not flush it down the toilet!!!! You could spread disease that way.

Use tweezers and grab the head of the tick and get as close to the dogs skin as possible and pull, sqush and flush the tick down the toilet (and I know someone said not to do this, but what's the worst you are going to do... spread germs in a sewer or septic tank, where's there so much bacteria and germs already?) Do not use your fingers to pull the tick out, because this can squeeze infectious germs from the tick into your dog's body.

Be careful using a source of heat. You can kill the tick. I wound up with a dead tick on my arm. I had to pull it out with tweezers. Your dog probably won't let you do this, but since the tick died I kept the heat there to kill all the germs I could. I've a nice scar to show for it. Good luck!

Try Vaseline first. Less risky.

. You can grab the tick with a pair of tweezers. Make sure that you grab very close to the skin and grasp it tightly and twist it to remove the tick. You really want to get the head if possible. You can cleanse the wound with soap and water or a little diluted H2O2.

Might call the vet on Monday and check in with them......You might want to make sure that she is on Frontline as that works best against fleas and ticks.

use tweezers, press in and pinch then pull. Ensure you get all the pieces out, then cleanse area with 1/2 % 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and water mix a few times following this procedure. My vet does it for me, but my dog is a bit of a puss and will not let me do it.
