I had aLab who lived to be 15 years old. She was a sweetheart with the family and a terror for anyone who approached the house. When she and my children were outside, she would position herself between the children and anyone who tried to approach them. I can't speak for all Labs, but mine was wonderful.

They are friendly. Remember you do need to socialize them, train them, and exercise them or they can develop bad habits, get out of control and obnoxious.

They are not generally good guard dogs. They will alert though. They will bark when a strangers appears, but then they will kiss them and become best friends forever. However, a dark-colored dog will sometimes deter people from robbing your house because they perceive a dark-colored dog as scarier. So you could get a black or chocolate lab. They won't be better guard dogs, but people might think they are.

They are friendly dogs and are too friendly to guard a house unless especially trained that way

In general, yes. But remember that each dog has its own personality and will be different.

The lab I adopted is weary of all people...even ones he has met before. My lab mix, on the other hand, loves all people and would probably greet an intruder with a wagging tail

They are what you make them.
If the dog is socalized from when it is a pup, it will be friendly.
They will naturally guard the house when they get older. (At least 8 months) Because anything or anyone strange will automatically make them leary and they will bark and if they
feel threatened, they will attack.
